WASHINGTON -- Republican officials said Thursday that Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, has been elected as the new House majority leader.
Boehner defeated Rep. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., 122-109.
He replaces Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, who had to step aside when he was indicted in an alleged campaign finance scheme.
In the first ballot Thursday, Blunt led with 110 votes over Boehner, who got 79. John Shadegg, R-Ariz., got 40 votes.
The rules required that the winner get a majority of the votes that are cast.
Boehner had pinned his hopes on denying Blunt a majority in the first round, and then winning a run-off.
