ESCONDIDO – A Guatemalan national wanted in San Diego County for violent crimes is in custody in Riverside County after being caught by Border Patrol agents in rural Escondido.

The Guatemalan was among several illegal immigrants who tried to flee after spotting a Border Patrol vehicle in rural Escondido Tuesday morning, a Border Patrol spokesman said Wednesday.

A record check revealed that the suspect, whom the Border Patrol declined to identify, had been deported in 2001. He was currently wanted by the county Sheriff's Department on suspicion of mayhem and attempted murder.
Most illegal immigrants aren't deported, but allowed to leave the United States voluntarily. Deportation requires a hearing before a judge, and a deportee caught in the country again may face fines and imprisonment, up to 20 years in prison under certain circumstances.

Agents turned the Guatemalan over to the Murrieta Police Department.
