McALLEN — A joint operation between police and federal agencies resulted in a significant drug and weapon seizure Wednesday.

McAllen police have eight people in custody after raids at two separate locations yesterday. Police are not releasing many details this morning, but expect to announce their findings later today, said Police Chief Victor Rodriguez. Seven of the eight suspected smugglers are undocumented immigrants, he said.

During the bust, police recovered several tons of pot, over 100 pounds of cocaine, and numerous automatic and semi-automatic weapons destined for Mexico, Rodriguez said.

Officers also seized grenades and thousands of rounds of ammunition for assault rifles.
