    Border boycott shaping up
    Group reacts to Minuteman project

    By Irma Lemus, Staff Writer

SAN BERNARDINO - Leaders of the National Alliance for Human Rights met here Saturday to plan the next steps in their fight against the Minuteman project, which members of the group called a mob of vigilante racists.
The Latino activist group will take the lead in planning what its members are calling a boycott of the Douglas, Ariz., border with Mexico on May 1. Minuteman project volunteers are in Douglas patrolling the border.

There are plans for people to block the border crossing, and residents on the Mexican side of the border in Agua Prieta, Sonora, will be urged not to shop in or visit Douglas.

Armando Navarro, a UC Riverside professor and coordinator of the group, said the goal is to bring awareness to the significant impact the Mexican consumer has on Douglas' economy and to shed light on the plight of immigrants.

A weak Mexican economy drives many to leave their homeland in order to build a better future for themselves and their families in the United States, Navarro said.

The group plans to hold a news conference Wednesday in San Bernardino to announce details of the boycott.

"We want to hit where it hurts the dollar bill,' alliance member Felipe Aguirre said in Spanish.

"This will all be passive. There will be no violence,' Aguirre said during the meeting at the city's Villasenor Branch Library.

Aguirre estimated Mexican consumers spend about $500,000 per year in Douglas, significantly adding to the town's economy. The Minuteman project has received much media coverage recently for the group's efforts to stop unauthorized immigrants from entering the country.

Since April 1, thousands of volunteers, many armed, have stationed themselves along 23 miles of U.S. border. The volunteer group says it will remain at the border until April 30.

Jim Gilchrist, Minuteman founder, said his motive for creating the project is not racism but to protect the country.

Maria Anna Gonzales said she spent three days in Douglas and Tombstone, Ariz., making sure that Minuteman volunteers did not violate the human rights of any immigrants.

"One incident was documented,' Gonzales said, " A (Minuteman) volunteer put a shirt on a person that said something absurd like: 'I was caught by Minuteman, and all I got was this lousy T-shirt.''

The logical question would be ...who are the real racists and vigilantes? Certainly not the MinuteMen.

While you are at it shed some light on the billions of dollars illegal
    aliens cost American taxpayers.

The US is NOT responsible for Mexican citizens. Mexico is.

I wonder what the legal status of the Alliance for Human Rights may be and how a University of California Professor would consider it appropriate as a state paid employee to interfere with enforcement of U. S. Law?

What the Professor is doing is no different that someone aiding a "jail break" except he is interfering with a crime prevention program to prevent the violation before it escalates into many more. What the Minuteman Project is trying to do is keep the aliens out before they break American Law and end up with the hundreds of thousands of other incarcerated aliens presently doing time in State and Federal Prisons.

Arizona has 80,000 illegal aliens incarcerated in their state prison system. I wonder how many are in the California prison system.

Minuteman Project is doing potential aliens a great favor sending them home before they get into trouble here and hurt Americans physically or economically.

I wonder if the Professor is spending his time on this when he should be teaching his students. It's hard to see how he would have time during work days for both this time of year. Looks like just another cheater to me--cheating his students out of a good education while ripping off the taxpayer. I'm sure federal money goes into the University of California for a number of programs which means some of that comes from North Carolina.

I say---Get back to work Professor, because you've got some real work to do for your paycheck and harassing the Minuteman Project and interfering with local economies in your state probably AREN'T in your Job Description with the University of California Riverside.

California colleges are notorius for their left wing liberal educators. The law is constantly being defined and redefined here (just look at the 9th Circuit District Court). It wasn't even illegal to have sex with a corpse in this state until a few months ago.
