'Violent deportee' escapes from ICE custody at JFK

Fugitive was in the middle of being transported by ICE to a connecting flight. Laura Ingle reports from New York.

Authorities identified the “violent deportee” who remained on the loose Wednesday after escaping immigration custody hours before at New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport.

Mohamadou Lamine Mbacke, 31, from Senegal, reportedly fled authorities at the airport while going through security. He was at the airport for deportation, expected to board a flight back to his home country.

“Mbacke entered the country lawfully in 2005 before violating the terms of his status. He was ordered deported in September 2015 by an immigration judge,” U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a Wednesday statement. “Mbacke has previous criminal convictions for multiple weapons and firearms offenses.”

Mbacke eluded authorities at Gate B23 in Terminal 4 at around 8:30 p.m. local time, New York Daily News reported.

Surveillance video showed him leaving the airport around 9 p.m. Tuesday in a taxi, ICE said.

Investigators have launched a dragnet for Mbacke, who was described as being 6 feet 3 inches tall and about 190 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black or purple shirt, jeans and sneakers.

The New York Post reported that he was not considered a threat to people at the airport. ICE officials, however, said people should not to attempt to apprehend him and instead immediately contact authorities.

Prisoner being deported escapes ICE agents at JFK Airport

    Wednesday, March 28, 2018 06:57PM

NEW YORK (WABC) -- A prisoner being deported by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents escaped their custody at JFK Airport, catching a taxi to freedom.

Mohamadou Lamine Mbacke, 31, who was being deported to Senegal on a prior weapons arrest, apparently ran away from the agents in Terminal 4, at Gate B23, around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Sources say the officers had gotten him something to eat as they waited for his flight to Dakar. They turned their backs for a split second, and he was gone.

They searched the terminal themselves, showing airport workers at duty free shops and newsstands Mbacke's picture. It wasn't until nearly two hours later, when the flight was about to depart, that they finally notified local authorities.

PAPD immediately flooded the terminal with officers and opened a command post, but it was far too late.

Mbacke was caught on surveillance video fleeing the airport in a yellow cab during that time.

He was last seen wearing a black or purple shirt, jeans and sneakers. He is 6-foot-3 and approximately 190 pounds.

Mbacke had flown with the agents from Detroit and was awaiting a connecting flight. He served state prison time in Michigan for gun possession and was ordered deported after his release, but it appears ICE didn't carry out that order until Tuesday.

Port Authority police released a statement saying, "An individual being transported by federal immigration officials at JFK Airport last night eluded custody during transfer to a connecting flight. A check of video cameras by authorities showed the individual left the airport in a cab. Federal authorities would know if he is still at large. He was not taken into custody in the airport by the Port Authority Police Department."

ICE released information about the suspect saying, "Mbacke entered the country lawfully in 2005 before violating the terms of his status. He was ordered deported in September 2015 by an immigration judge. Mbacke has previous criminal convictions for multiple weapons and firearms offenses. ICE along with state, federal and local authorities are currently actively seeking his whereabouts. Members of the public should not to attempt to apprehend him and instead immediately contact authorities."

Paul Nunziato, president of the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association, also issued a statement, saying, "The delay in notifying the Port Authority Police Department about the prisoner's escape is yet another example of the lack of coordinated communications between all law enforcement agencies at our nation's airports. The Port Authority PBA and its national affiliate, the American Alliance of Airport Police Officers, have been calling for coordinated, integrated communications between law enforcement agencies along with seamless video surveillance systems with law enforcement access. This should include a requirement that all law enforcement agencies must notify airport police commands when prisoners are being transported through airports and in terminals. Though these recommendations have not been put into effect, the public can be sure that Port Authority Police Officers will always strive to work effectively with our federal, state and local law enforcement partners."

I was about to post this. It's a good thing I first carefully looked through the posted articles. I saw this on the news earlier tonight. But this article doesn't mention that he was caught here in Chicago. I will post another more detailed article about this here in this thread.

Mohamadou Lamine Mbacke, 31, escaped authorities at JFK airport. (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement)

Mohamadou Lamine Mbacke, the man who escaped immigration custody earlier this week at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, has been apprehended in Chicago, authorities said.

The manhunt for Mbacke, the 31-year-old from Senegal who was described by authorities as a "violent deportee," ended Friday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said in a statement.

The escapee was at the airport for deportation Tuesday evening when he reportedly fled from law enforcement. Mbacke was expected to board a flight back to his home country.

"An ICE fugitive who escaped from custody Tuesday night during his removal to Senegal is in federal custody Friday after nearly three days on the run," ICE said in a statement. Mbacke "was taken into custody without incident at a coffee shop near the downtown Chicago Amtrak station with the assistance from federal partners."

ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Fugitive Operations team in Chicago made the arrest. ICE said that it, along with federal, state and local authorities, was working nonstop to locate and caputre Mbacke.

Initial reports suggested that Mbacke fled authorities while going through security. But according to a complaint filed against Mbacke in the U.S. District Court Eastern District of New York, "while in the gate area, the defendant asked for and received permission to sit approximately eight to 10 rows away from the deportation officers."

"Shortly thereafter, without authorization from the deportation officers, the defendant departed the gate area," the complaint said.
Mbacke appeared in court Friday in Chicago and faces an escape charge, said Joseph Fitzpatrick, assistant U.S. attorney, Northern District of Illinois. A judge ordered Mbacke removed to the Eastern District of New York.

Mbacke reportedly managed to elude law enforcement at Gate B23 in Terminal 4 around 8:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday.
Following his escape, Mbacke was captured on surveillance video leaving the airport in a taxi around 9 p.m, ICE said.

"Mbacke entered the country lawfully in 2005 before violating the terms of his status," authorities said. "He was ordered deported in September 2015 by an immigration judge. Mbacke has previous criminal convictions for multiple weapons and firearms offenses."

In his initial court appearance on Friday afternoon in Chicago Mbacke waved a detention hearing, an official told Fox News. The magistrate judge then ordered him to be removed to New York.

It wasn't immediately clear when he would be sent back.

Fox News' Courtney Crawford, Benjamin Brown and Tamara Gitt contributed to this report.
