EDINBURG – U.S Border Patrol agents have arrested 195 gang members attempting to illegally enter the country since the start of the fiscal year, according to a news release.
Two of the most recent arrests occurred this week as two men admitted to being members of the 18th Street gang and the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang, respectively.
The first arrest came Tuesday afternoon as agents detained a Mexican national near Roma. During processing at the Border Patrol station, the man admitted to being a member of the 18th Street gang, according to the release.
The second arrest was of an El Salvador national near Sarita who admitted to being a member of the MS-13 street gang.
Both men were sent to the Rio Grande Valley Sector Prosecutions Unit for further processing, according to the release.
For fiscal year 2015, which began Oct. 1 agents have apprehended 195 gang members, according to the release.
