Border Patrol agent fatally shoots man rock-throwing man

YUMA, Ariz. -- A U.S. Border Patrol agent fatally shot a man who was throwing rocks at officers from the Mexican side of the border late Saturday, officials said.

The incident began after agents spotted a suspicious vehicle near the Andrade Port of Entry west of the California-Arizona border, just north of the international border and alongside the Colorado River.

The driver fled and then tried to swim across a pond along the river in an effort to return to Mexico, the agency said in a press release.

But the man began to struggle to stay afloat and agents threw him a flotation device and began to try to rescue him. Several people on the other side of the border then began throwing rocks at the agents, and one officer was struck in the head.

The officer then shot at a man who was getting ready to throw another rock, the Border Patrol said. Mexican authorities took the man to a hospital, where he died.

Attacks on Border Patrol agents have become more common in recent years, and this year agents say they're seeing smugglers become even more violent as more federal resources make crossing into the U.S. ever more difficult.

Smugglers are throwing softball-sized rocks, hunks of concrete and whole bricks at agents, either out of frustration or to try to get authorities to back off.

Maybe they have heard what's happened to our other two border patrol agents and feel they can do almost anything. I mean, rock throwing isn't a match for guns and yet those hoods may be trying to provoke our agents and hope they get in trouble too. There better not be a case against our agent or this country will go nuts.

If Vicente Fox has anything to say about it, probably so. I imagine if Mexico complains, Alberto Gonzales will try to appease them.

My guess is Yes the border patrol agent will be fighting for his life for doing his job. Folks you better wake up and smell the roses UNLESS we get state governments behind this issue and make them use their power (such as is left) against the Federal government you better start preparing for the forfeiture of your property (HR1757 Restructuring Act of 1997 - Section B - Sovereignty) and preparing for far worse than lost jobs, drunken psychotic illegals and gang rapes.

You need to harass your state and local officials to:
PASS LEGISLATION COUNTERING THE PATRIOT ACT
PASS LEGISLATION THAT THE STATE WILL NOT ENFORCE DRACONIAN ASPECTS OF MARTIAL LAW ( it is coming and it will not be your national guard but U.N. troops enforcing it)
THE STATES CANNOT ALLOW FEDERALIZATION OF THE NATIONAL GUARD.
BEGIN CREATING A STATE MILITA FORCE
EXPAND GUN LAWS THAT ALLOW CITIZENS TO PROTECT THEMSELVES.
    MAINTAIN CONTROL OF FOOD LABELING

For those of you with children in school contact your local school board. Set up a meeting. Find out what their guidelines are in the event of an emergency or martial law. THEN SCREAM TO HIGH HEAVEN!

The issue of the border is only the cancor sore of the real problem, the United States and your constitutional rights are being dismantled! I can't see how anyone can miss it at this point and I cannot understand how people do not realize the complexity of the border issue. IT is more than jobs! It is more than violent attacks on American citizens. IT IS IN FACT THE OVERTHROW OF OUR GOVERNMENT! WAKE UP

    _________
I have said it before and I will say it again... the only way "they" the Federal Govt is going to get by with this IS IF YOU LET THEM!
A few hundred power happy elitest and a few thousand of their mindless troops cannot control 278,000,000 people and they KNOW IT.

WAKE UP! you cannot excercise that power under martial law!

Exactly what I thought to myself when I first read this story!

Plus, the CBP agent first tried to help these people first - and look what he gets in return?

Get ready for another round of individual BP agent defending him/herself against the 'machine'.

Sounds like justifiable force to me. Especially since one agent had been struck in the head.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent shot and killed a man on the Mexico side of the border during an altercation Saturday night near the U.S. Port of Entry at Andrade, Calif., according to the Border Patrol.

Senior Patrol Agent Chris Van Wagenen said the incident occurred when agents attempted to stop and investigate another man driving a vehicle east of the port of entry. The driver, a suspected illegal immigrant, then left the vehicle and attempted to return to Mexico by entering the Alamo Pond, on the Colorado River. Wagenen said the man soon began struggling to stay afloat, and agents came to his aid.

“When he was starting to struggle, the agents threw in a rescue disk, trying to save him," said Van Wagenen. “There were other men, on the fence, and they began to throw rocks at the agents.”

Van Wagenen said it was then that agents came under attack by several individuals throwing rocks on the Mexico side of the border. One agent was struck in the head. When one of the men was observed preparing to throw another rock, an agent fired one round from his gun and struck him.

“The individual who was struck began to run south into Mexico," Van Wagenen said.

Mexican authorities later found the man and took him to a hospital in Los Algodones, Baja Calif. He was pronounced dead there, according to the Border Patrol.

The individual whose vehicle was originally stopped by the Border Patrol fled back into Mexico, Van Wagenen said.

He added that the FBI will conduct an investigation into the shooting. The agent involved is now on leave and will receive employee assistance counseling.

“As is customary, the agent who did the shooting is on three days of paid administrative leave.”

Van Wagenen said this incident is just another part of increased violence along the border. He said there have already been 130 assaults on Border Patrol agents this year, up from 119 last year.

Miguel Escobar, Mexican consul in Yuma, said the Mexican Consulate would monitor the situation as it develops.

“We are concerned about acts of violence affecting Mexican nationals, and we will keep close watch in regard to the development of this particular case,” Escobar said.
