SAN DIEGO—Authorities say a Border Patrol agent fired shots at a pickup truck when the driver backed the vehicle toward him during a stop in San Diego County.
An agency spokesman says no one was injured in the incident early Sunday in Potrero.

The driver of the white pickup resisted initial attempts by the agent to stop him. After the truck did stop, the driver started backing up towards the agent, prompting him to fire 3 rounds.

The driver took off in the vehicle and was not caught.

The Border Patrol believes the man was engaged in a smuggling operation. Nine suspected illegal immigrants were found hiding in rocks in the area and were taken into custody.

This is the second incidence of a border patrol agent firing shots in the week since the murder of Border Patrol agent Luis Aguilar Jr., who was struck and killed by a vehicle that entered the country illegally Jan. 19 near Yuma, Ariz..

On Jan. 24th "Border Patrol Shooting Sends Suspected Smuggler to Hospital "
Cochise County investigators say when the agent went up to the truck, the driver tried to drive away, somehow trapping the agent with the truck door.
The agent was dragged 20 feet before firing one shot hitting the drivers leg.

    Second incident 01/27/2008
The driver of the white pickup resisted initial attempts by the agent to stop him. After the truck did stop, the driver started backing up towards the agent, prompting him to fire 3 rounds.
The driver took off in the vehicle and was not caught.
In all 3 events, the vehicle was used as a deadly weapon. In the last two, shots were fired and one smuggler was shot in the leg and the second one escaped.
I hope this is a new policy for the border agents---permission to use whatever force necessary to defend themselves.

God Bless Our Heroic Border Agents And Keep Them Safe.
