A border agent was shot multiple times Thursday night, close to the border near Campo on Shockey Truck Trail about 100 yards north of the border.

Reports of the shooting came in around 9:30 p.m. The agent was shot multiple times and was hit in the head.

Medical crews report the agent is dead.

The shooter or shooters may have fled across the border.

NEAR CAMPO, Calif. -- A U.S. Border Patrol Agent has been shot and killed near Campo, according to a CalFire spokesman, Nick Schuler.

The shooting happened about 9:30 p.m. near SR-94 and Shockey Truck Trail.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are not yet known. 10News has a crew enroute to the scene and will have more on 10News at 11.

Just watched channel 10 news at 11 pm, they opened with this story. Nothing much more reported. Showed a plaque of 19 border patrol agents who have been killed in the line of duty to which one more will be added. Said FBI agents were on the way. Also said they'd have more news in the morning.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent was fatally shot in the Campo area Thursday night, authorities said.
Four engines, a paramedic ambulance and a medical helicopter were dispatched to the area, but the agent was pronounced dead at the scene, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Nick Schuler said.
San Diego police said the agent was shot in the head.
The shooting was reported about 9:15 p.m. near the border on Shockey Truck Trail in an area southeast of the San Diego Sheriff's Department's Campo substation, authorities said.
The Sheriff's Department was also responding to the scene.
