TX - Rescue Workers Save Man Stuck in Border Fence

    Reported by Daisy Martinez

BROWNSVILLE – Brownsville emergency crews were forced to pry apart bars on the border fence as they worked to save a man who attempted to cross into the U.S. illegally.

Crews are called to incidents along the border fence at least twice a month. In this case, they used the Jaws of Life since the man's leg got trapped between the fences.

The scene unfolded Monday night near the Sabal Palm sanctuary on the outskirts of Brownsville, better known for its scenic trails and wildlife.

"Our crews responded to an assistance call from the U.S. Border Patrol. They apparently had an individual stuck on the border fence or had his leg entrapped in the border wall," said Brownsville Fire Interim Chief Deputy Cesar Pedraza.

The man was approximately 18 to 20 feet off the ground, Pedraza said. As his leg became more swollen, it was clear it wouldn't be a matter of just pulling it out.

"If you can imagine prying two pieces of metal apart, that's what they did," Pedraza said. "The border wall is obviously very thick. It's a fortified fence and that's why we needed the hydraulic tools. The other option would be to cut completely through the fence."

Fire crews were able to get the man down safely and took him to a hospital.

Residents living close to Sabal Palms tell CHANNEL 5 NEWS they aren't surprised. Amy Granado said seeing people cross into the U.S. illegally in the area has become a way of life.

"This ditch that we have right here, they'll sometimes lay there low. Then you'll see them cross over, maybe like four or five people at a time," Granado said, "usually males, I don't really see children or females.”

Granado said she had a close call with a person in the country illegally on her property.

"I noticed a gentleman in our back porch trying to open the doors to see if it was open," she said.

She's never really been scared of the people crossing near her home, Granado said, but feels safer with the increased presence of Border Patrol agents and Department of Public Safety troopers in the area.

No one else was found with the man stuck on the fence.

A U.S. Border Patrol spokesman told CHANNEL 5 NEWS that in any case, the person's well-being always comes first before being processed.

Send him to hospital on the Mexican side!

We should not be forced to foot the bill for this!

    Deport him now.

Emergency crews rescue man stuck on border fence in Otay Mesa

    Posted: Apr 30, 2013 7:32 PM PDTUpdated: Apr 30, 2013 7:32 PM PDT

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man trying to sneak into the United States over the border fence in Otay Mesa Tuesday got stuck in barbed wire on top of the barrier and had to be rescued by emergency personnel.

The stranded migrant was discovered shortly before 4 p.m. near the southern terminus of La Media Road, near Brown Field airport, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Firefighters used a ladder truck to get to the uninjured man, who was about 20 feet above the ground, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said. It took about an hour to free him, after which he was turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol, according to Luque.

Fleeing smugglers leave woman dangling from Mexico border fence

    JULY 12, 2017 7:23 AM

Smugglers abandoned a Mexican woman left hanging from a border fence Saturday near Nogales, Ariz.

U.S. Border Patrol agents patrolling the border east of Nogales found two smugglers trying to lower the woman over the fence in a harness, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. When agents approached, the men fled as the woman tried to scramble back over the fence into Mexico.

The agents found the woman dangling about 15 feet off the ground. The Nogales Fire Department helped rescue her.

The woman was uninjured and is being processed for immigration violation, reports the Border Patrol.

I'd just leave 'em there. They're on the Mexican side of the wall, let Mexico worry about 'em.

Put a big roller drum on top...it rolls one-way...toward the Mexican side and slather it up with RED dyed grease!

Let them plop back over on their side!

I like that "roller drum" idea.

Man Trapped In Razor Wire Border Fence Removed By San Diego Fire Department (VIDEO)

The San Diego Fire Department retrieved a man Tuesday left trapped 20 feet in the air, when
razor wire sliced through his flesh, trapping him on top of the border fence separating the Mexico from the United States, Fox 5 San Diego reports.

The would-be migrant approached the fence with a ladder and tried to jump over — a tactic used by some people who normally lay hard mats over the fence, according to Fox 5. (If you’ve seen the movie “Fight Club,” you may be familiar with the technique.)

The man was taken to receive medical treatment and may face charges for illegal entry.

The episode was a tragic reminder of how desperate some people are to enter to the United States, but it wasn’t an isolated event. U.S. authorities helped rescue some 21 people caught on the border fence last year, the Border Patrol told Fox 5.

The U.S. Congress is currently considering a bipartisan proposal for immigration reform that would pour billions more dollars into border security.

The proposal calls for $1.5 billion to expand the border fence by some 651 miles, according to ProPublica. The article cites a Senate hearing in which Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said:
I think what we would do if the bill passes… is go back and look at the type of fencing we have and say, ‘Do we want to make it triple what it is or taller?’ — or something of that sort.

Border Patrol agents saw the man stuck in the fence just before 3:45 p.m. and quickly called the San Diego Fire Department to get the man down from his spot east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.

It took rescuers over an hour to finally free the man from the razor wire some 20 feet in the air before helping him down to the ground.

The undocumented immigrant was evaluated by EMTs at the scene and then taken into custody.
