Border Patrol agents arrested a Mexican sex offender last week near Roma.

Agents arrested Francisco Javier Martinez-Lopez, 38, a Mexican citizen -- and a sex offender registered with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

On April 23, 2012, Martinez was convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child, according to Department of Public Safety records, which list the victim as a 7-year-old girl.

The federal government deported Martinez on Feb. 3, 2016, through Laredo.
On Nov. 17, agents arrested Martinez near Roma, according to the criminal complaint against him.

"Defendant claims to have illegally entered the United States on November 17, 2016, near Roma, Texas," according to the criminal complaint. "Record checks revealed the Defendant was formally Deported/Excluded from the United States on February 3, 2016, through Laredo, Texas."
Martinez is charged with illegal re-entry.

Court records don't list an attorney for Martinez, who remains in federal custody.
