(Friday, April 10, 2009)

Campo, Calif. - A 37-year-old Mexican man wanted in San Diego on suspicion of murder was apprehended in Campo, Calif. this morning by U.S. Customs and Border Protection after he illegally entered the country.

Border Patrol agents encountered the suspect, Saul Hernandez-Echeverria, at about 8 a.m. as he was hiking northbound along with three other Mexican nationals about two miles north of the international border. After determining that the group was illegally in the country, agents placed them under arrest and transported them to a nearby Border Patrol detention facility.

While agents processed the group of illegal aliens, they discovered that Hernandez had a felony murder warrant, which was issued by the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. The warrant was confirmed and Hernandez is currently awaiting extradition for the warrant.

Through collaborative efforts with other law enforcement agencies, the Border Patrol is better able resolve all potential threats entering our country within the San Diego Sector area of operations.
