LORDSBURG — Border Patrol agents in Lordsburg helped rescue a migrant woman Friday in the area of Estes Canyon near the Arizona-New Mexico state line, according to a news release.

The 24-year old woman was injured by an apparent fall into a large rock.

She was believed to have been traveling with a large group of migrants when she and two other females became stranded in rugged terrain near the top of a ridge, according to the release. Agents working in the area watched several of the migrants fall or trip as they tried to climb a steep slope.

Agents responded and found three women, one of whom was suffering from an apparent knee injury. A Border Patrol rescue and trauma specialist was on scene and treated the injury before the woman was transported to Mimbres Memorial Hospital in Deming.

The other members of the group were believed to have turned back south toward Mexico. The two other women apprehended with the injured female were found to be undocumented and were being processed by federal officials.

Once the injured woman is released from the hospital her citizenship status will be determined, and measures will be taken to process her return to her country of origin.

To date through the end of March in fiscal year 2009, there have been a total of nine rescues of migrants in the El Paso sector, which includes the southern border of New Mexico.
