Border Patrol Agents Seize 3,000 Pounds of Marijuana in Texas
(Tuesday, June 09, 2009)
Laredo, Texas – Border Patrol agents assigned to the Laredo, Texas north station stopped six marijuana smuggling attempts over the weekend, five of which occurred at the immigration checkpoint north of the city.
The largest seizure occurred on Friday when agents at the checkpoint conducted an immigration inspection of the driver of a tractor-trailer. During the inspection, a canine team detected the possible presence of hidden contraband or people in the trailer.
Agents searched the trailer and found 63 large cellophane-wrapped bundles inside five wooden shipping crates. The bundles contained marijuana with a total weight of 2,961 pounds and an estimated street value of $2.4 million.
The weekend’s other marijuana seizures at the checkpoint were:
325.7 pounds with an estimated value of $260,560 seized Sunday from a tractor-trailer.
191.5 pounds with an estimated value of $153,200 seized Saturday from the gas tank of an SUV.
64.1 pounds with an estimated value of $51,280 seized Sunday from a sedan.
25.1 pounds with an estimated value of $20,080 seized Saturday from the spare tire of an SUV.
Agents assigned to the Laredo north station also made a significant drug seizure away from checkpoint when they responded Sunday to reports of suspicious activity on a ranch near Laredo. During their investigation, agents found four large bundles containing a total of 375.2 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $300,160.
The marijuana, subjects and vehicles from all of the cases were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
