Border Patrol Agents Thwart Dangerous Smuggling Attempt

DEL RIO, Texas – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Del Rio Station arrested a human smuggler attempting to smuggle four illegal aliens, July 17.

Agents assigned to the Del Rio Station attempted to stop a stolen white 2017 Chevy Silverado bearing fictitious license plates.

The vehicle fled from the agents at a high rate of speed through a parking lot, where it collided with a civilian motorist. The vehicle accident occurred in a crowded intersection on Veterans Boulevard, in front of some local businesses.

Agents arrested a United States citizen smuggler and four illegal aliens from the countries of Mexico and El Salvador.

The driver, Angel Gabriel Casarez-Rodriguez, a 21-year-old from San Antonio, is charged in a criminal complaint with violation of 8 USC 1324, Alien Smuggling, which carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

“This reckless behavior endangered not only the people in the truck, but also the local population of Del Rio,” said Chief Patrol Agent Austin L. Skero II. “Thanks to our agents, the undocumented alien passengers were safely apprehended, and our community was kept safe from the criminal smuggler, who is now behind bars.”

The illegal aliens were processed in accordance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection guidelines.

A criminal complaint is merely a charge and should not be considered as evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
