Thread: Border Patrol agents warn immigrants against using canals to cross border

EL PASO, Texas - On Tuesday, Border Patrol agents stationed in El Paso demonstrated the dangers of using a canal to cross the border.

The demonstration was conducted by the U.S. Border Patrol’s search and rescue team in hopes of raising awareness and discouraging undocumented immigrants from using a canal to enter the United State illegally.

BORSTAR commander Dominic Bowcutt told NewsChannel 9, “Right now the water is moving very rapidly and it’s difficult to get out of the canal even if you’re a strong swimmer. The sides of the canal are very smooth and slick and the current is much strong than people realize. Without ropes and a life jacket, it’s very difficult to get out.”

Tuesday’s demonstration was part of an ongoing effort to warn border residents about the dangers posed by swift moving water and hot desert climates.

According to agents, the ongoing campaign has significantly reduced the number of deaths recorded in the El Paso area.

In FY2005, 28 people died either in the desert or in waterways.

However, that number dropped to six deaths and 34 rescues in FY2016.

Meanwhile, officials with Customs and Border Protection released their annual PSA on Tuesday educating the public about the dangers they can encounter when attempting to illegally enter the United States.

Border Patrol agent Erika King told NewsChannel 9, “We want to make sure there’s no deaths at all.”

King said, “We invited the Mexican federal police as well as the Mexican consulate. They were here to record with other Mexican news stations and send that message to the south side of the border.”

In FY2017, there have been two immigrant deaths and 25 rescues in the El Paso area so far.

You tell 'em Beezer!! Aren't you sick and tired of every time a female illegal alien is arrested, the media describes her as a "mother". What about all the American "mothers" arrested for violating the law? They never headline American mothers who commit crimes or break the law as "mothers". I'm sick of that. Every female in prison in the US including ALL AMERICANS is either a "mother" or a "daughter". Every American male in prison in the US is either a "father" or a "son". STOP THE DOUBLE-STANDARD sob story reporting on illegal aliens. They are no better than Americans, they are not "special", they deserve no sob story. They like all persons deserve a straight-forward fact-based report on their issue, regardless of what it is or where they came from.
