    Williams P. Martinez could have taken an easier route to becoming an American.

    But if he had, Martinez, a specialist wounded in Afghanistan, wouldn't have gotten a Purple Heart, his citizenship and a new first name in the same ceremony — and he wouldn't have bubbled over after receiving his naturalization certificate at Fort Sam Houston.
