Nine people suspected of entering the country illegally were apprehended Saturday night after getting out of a boat at an area known as Dog Beach, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said Monday.
About 6:20 p.m. Saturday, U.S. Border Patrol agents on patrol saw a boat without running lights nearing the shoreline of the beach, a leash-free area for dogs at the northern end of Coronado near North Island Naval Air Station.
Shortly after the boat landed on shore, seven men and two women were arrested. Two of the men are accused of organizing the smuggling attempt and are in federal custody. All nine are Mexican nationals, CBP officials said.
