THE BROWNSVILLE HERALD

A Matamoros man was arrested late Wednesday when a Border Patrol agent found him crouching in a brushy area near almost 120 pounds of marijuana, a police report said.

The agent was stationed around 9:30 p.m. near the 900 block of South Oklahoma Road, an area that police said is known for drug trafficking and human smuggling.

The agent observed two men walking through the dark, just north of a gap in the border wall, with bundles strapped to their backs.

The Border Patrol agent pursued the men and found one hiding in the grass near a bundle of marijuana that weighed 118.3 pounds, the report said.

The Border Patrol turned the man over to Brownsville Police, Police identified him as Baldemar Garcia, 20, and arrested him for possession of marijuana. Police determined he is a citizen of Mexico and was in the U.S. illegally.

Garcia confessed to carrying the narcotic, the report said.
