Border Patrol drops off over 100 migrants at bus stop in Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KRQE) - Friday, the U.S. Border Patrol dropped off 114 asylum seekers at a Las Cruces bus stop. The drop off took place around 9 a.m. near the intersection of Valley Drive and Amador Avenue.

The stop came in response to a request made by the City of Las Cruces and Dona Ana County for Border Patrol to temporarily halt bringing migrants to Las Cruces as all shelters have reached capacity. The initial group of 50 asylum seekers met with personnel from Gospel Rescue Mission as they walked to the organization.

From the mission, migrants were then taken to the City of Las Cruces' former armory which is currently being used as a processing center and temporary shelter for asylum seekers. Another group of 64 were transported from the bus stop straight to the armory in City of Las Cruces vans.

A backlog in travel out of the city has resulted in the shelters reaching their capacity.
