BORDER PATROL HEAD DENIES REPORT THAT SANCTUARY CITY SUPPORTER WILL TAKE HIS PLACE
by LANA SHADWICK
9 Nov 2015
A former San Francisco Police Chief who has been very open about her support of sanctuary cities is reportedly on the short list to head the U.S. Border Patrol, however, the current head of the agency is denying the accuracy of the report.
Fox News Politics is reporting that Heather Fong is being considered to become the new chief of the Border Patrol. The current chief is Mike J. Fischer who announced his resignation in October.
House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mike McCaul (R-TX) told Fox, “If they bring [a police chief] in for political purposes based on the sanctuary cities model, that politicizes the job and I think it completely undermines credibility and morale in the organization.”
McCaul added, “If you have someone who is advocating for sanctuary cities, that’s the opposite side. They welcome these illegal immigrants to stay in the country. And so I think it’s at cross-purpose with the mission itself.”
Fong used her position as police chief to keep illegal immigrants and criminal illegal aliens from being deported. She served in that capacity for five years. She was with the San Francisco Police Department for 32 years.
Fong presently serves as an assistant secretary for state and local law enforcement at the Department of Homeland Security and has been in this position since November 17, 2014. The Homeland Security website states that “Fong is the Department’s primary liaison with nearly 18,000 state, local, tribal, and territorial law enforcement agencies across the country.”
According to the U.S. Custom and Border Protection official website, the “CBP’s top priority is to keep terrorists and their weapons from entering the U.S. while welcoming all legitimate travelers and commerce. CBP officers and agents enforce all applicable U.S. laws, including against illegal immigration, narcotics smuggling and illegal importation.”
Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Gil Kerlikowske released a statement that said the decision is up to him. He added, “At this time, CPB has not begun the search for the Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol. It is completely false that any individual could be a potential candidate at this time. We are currently preparing the paperwork to begin the process.”
