BROWNSVILLE – Smugglers used dangerous road spikes to disable agents and evade arrest before fleeing to Mexico, according to Border Patrol. The use of those caltrops in Brownsville is unheard of for many.
Last Thursday, on the east side of Brownsville, a driver failed to yield and then threw out the caltrops, said Border Patrol. The spikes disabled two federal vehicles, said a statement.
At Villarreal's Tires in Brownsville, Jose Barraza said customers come to repair damages from caltrops. Only the damage occurs in Matamoros.
"I fix it," he said. "But when I inflate them, they don't look the same."
Barraza said he recommends customers replace caltrop-damaged tires, altogether. The damage is too severe, he said.
Border Patrol continues watching the area where the caltrop incident happened. The suspect was able to flee across the border.
