EL PASO, Texas -- El Paso police are investigating an attack on a border patrol officer who was off duty. A border patrol spokesperson said the agent was attacked Tuesday, Oct. 28 at the Howdy’s gas station at Artcraft Road and Interstate-10.
Border Patrol said the agent was trying to pump gas, when he noticed three men staring at him. The men then became confrontational and that escalated into an attack on the agent, agents said. El Paso police said no one has been charged in this case, but someone involved at the site of the crime was arrested on unrelated charges.
The agent received minor injuries. Border Patrol would not confirm if the agent was in uniform or if a weapon was used. While Border Patrol does not track off-duty attacks, they said attacks on their agents are on the rise.
“Just to bring in their narcotics or human cargo, they don’t care,’ said Border Patrol spokesman Ramiro Cordero. “They’re going to try to hurt us. Just last year we had a 20 percent increase in assaults against our agents.â€
