Customs and Border Patrol Commissioner Mark Morgan summarized federal construction of a border wall on the US-Mexico border in two Monday tweets, explaining the ramifications of a cancellation of wall construction.

More than 450 miles of border wall will have been constructed in volatile areas of the southern border by the end of the year.

We have completed more than 426 miles of new border wall system, and we’re going to meet our mark of 450 miles by the end of the year.Nearly all of the miles funded for new border wall system are currently under contract. The impact of stopping construction would be disastrous.

Much more is slated to begin in 2021, with contracts for wall construction already allocated to private builders. It’s a major misnomer to suggest the new walling is merely a updated replacement for existing fencing, much of which only protected areas of the border near major crossings from vehicular traffic. Modernized and effective walling has assisted immigration authorities in clamping down on illegal immigration in a fashion previous presidential administrations have proved unable to do.

Morgan revealed that “billions” have already been allocated for more wall construction. A cancellation of construction would ensure those funds are wasted to the US taxpayer.

1. The costs when we walk away from billions already invested, incl. a settlement process for termination of convenience.
2. Materials have already been purchased, incl. 270,000 tons of steel.
3. More costs incurred for restoration, such as filling in trenches already dug.

The construction of a “big, beautiful” wall on the southern border was the primary policy proposal of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. Joe Biden has vowed to halt construction of new border walling as a political slight against Trump, making the promise to pro-illegal immigration lobby groups. Immigration was largely ignored as a political topic of the 2020 election, with mainstream media debate moderators instead focusing topics of conversation on race riots in major US cities.

Biden also will face demands for cheap illegal immigrant labor from business lobby organizations, many of which supported his presidential campaign. He’s declined to commit to actually tearing down wall to open up the borders, although some in his progressive constituency have demanded it.

Criminal smuggler organizations are celebrating the prospect of a Joe Biden presidency, assuring potential trafficking victims that they’ll easily infiltrate the US southern border when the Democrat is inaugurated as president.
