Border Patrol preparing for immigrant rescues as summer months approach




MCALLEN, Texas - Border patrol agents are preparing for rescue season as temperatures are expected to reach triple digits in the next few months. According to agents, more immigrants die during the summer due to dehydration. The Department of Homeland Security’s Acting Secretary says times are only getting tougher for those attempting to enter the country illegally.

Kevin McAleenan, DHS Acting Secretary, "It's just starting to get hot here in South Texas, it's only mid-April and it's only going to get more and more dangerous to cross that border. They've saved people found suffering from dehydration, heat strokes, starvation, hypothermia. Our agents have saved people drowning in the river who were injured and were left by smugglers."

Border Patrol agents rescued over 4,000 immigrants last year. According to agents, over 1,000 have already been rescued in the last four months.
