TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — There's big money belonging to drug smugglers along the border and some of it is being confiscated by the feds.

Agents have recently recovered $260,000 while operating checkpoints north of the border.

Border Patrol officers at the Nogales port of entry seized $240,000 Monday during checkpoint operations on Interstate 19.

On Aug. 5, agents recovered $20,000 belonging to drug smugglers.

In the most recent cash recovery, agents were alerted by a canine team to a tractor-trailer.

During a search Aug. 16, agents uncovered 27 packages of U.S. currency stashed among cargo.The currency and trailer were seized and the driver was arrested.

The Patrol Agent in Charge at the Nogales Station says seizing cash impacts the smugglers where it hurts them the most - their pockets.

It all goes into a Federal "Fines and Forfeitures" Account.
The money goes for City, County, State and Federal law enforcement.
