    Border Patrol recovers $500K worth of pot, arrests 16 suspected smugglers

    TUCSON, Ariz. — Border Patrol agents recovered more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated $543,000 and arrested 16 suspected drug smugglers while patrolling in the western Arizona desert.

    Ajo Station agents operating a mobile surveillance system watched a group of suspected narcotics smugglers west of the Lukeville Port of Entry Wednesday.

    Agents busted eight men and seized 530 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated $265,000. The narcotics and men were transported to the Ajo Border Patrol Station for further processing. The men are now facing federal charges.

    In a separate incident, agents found eight suspected drug mules along with 557 pounds of marijuana. The narcotics are valued at $278,500.
