Law Enforcement Agencies Working Together Stop Human Smuggling Attempt and Recover Stolen Vehicle
Release Date: August 11, 2020
LAREDO, TEXAS – Border Patrol agents, with assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), prevented a human smuggling attempt and recovered a stolen vehicle after a bailout in south Laredo.
The incident occurred during the afternoon of August 10, when agents conducted a records check of a white pickup truck traveling on Mines Road. After receiving information that the vehicle was stolen, agents attempted a vehicle stop. The driver failed to yield and continued to travel south. DPS air support advised agents that the vehicle was traveling east on Loop 20 and eventually turned onto Clark Boulevard with DPS in pursuit.
The vehicle came to an abrupt stop at the intersection of Market Street and Logan Avenue where the occupants bailed out and attempted to abscond into the local area. Agents and DPS troopers apprehended 13 individuals, including the U.S. citizen driver.
The other 12 individuals were determined to be illegally present in the United States from the country of Mexico.
The driver was arrested by DPS pending state prosecution. The rest were taken into custody by the U.S. Border Patrol. DPS recovered the stolen vehicle.
