PHOENIX — Immigration and Customs Enforcement has started to release more than 400 asylum seekers in Arizona. A coalition of churches and organizations across Arizona began accepting immigrants on Sunday.

Close to 100 immigrants were dropped off Monday evening at Shadow Rock United Church of Christ, Pastor Ken Heintzelman said in an email message.

The church is expecting to house most of the asylum seekers through the middle of the week, until they can connect with family and friends to arrange travel elsewhere across the country, said Heintzelman.

“We have done this before, but not for this large number of guests. Sometimes we are preparing for 20-25 and no one shows up, sometimes we are preparing for 6-10 and 20-25 show up,” Liz Curry, President of the Board of Shadow Rock United Church of Christ, said.

“This is by far the largest group with even increased needs because they were given no finances to help them find their families.”

The church has a history of supporting immigrants.
In February, Shadow Rock United gave sanctuary to a man facing deportation for a third time, allowing him to remain in the U.S. with his sick child and pregnant wife.

In July, Pastor Ken Heintzelman spoke at a press conference in front of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Phoenix denouncing the actions of ICE separating families caught trying to cross the border.

Being in a border state, immigration is a major issue for Gov. Doug Ducey who joined KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Mac & Gaydos on Monday afternoon.

“Of course we’re communicating with the federal government, homeland security,” Ducey said. “Thank goodness for our non-profit community, the NGO’s (Non-governmental organization), the faith-based community.

These are people that are going to go through the process with the federal government as they seek asylum.

“But some of these organizations are going to help them find shelter and places to live. This is part of the surge of activity that’s happened at the border.”

ICE spokesperson Yasmeen Pitts O’Keefe also issued a statement on the release of the families.

“After decades of inaction by Congress, the government has remained severely constrained in its ability to detain and promptly remove families that have no legal basis to remain in the United States,” O’Keefe said in the statement.

She said the organization began to release family units that are in danger of being held past time allotted based on judicial decisions interpreting the Flores Settlement Agreement.

Families typically undergo interviews confirming coordinates and final destinations throughout the country, but are not required to do so.

Due to time and resource limitations, some of the families have started to be released in Arizona before final plans could be discussed and accommodated. These families are being released to the coalition organizations.

From the budget year that ended Sept. 30, the U.S. has admitted only one-quarter of the number of refugees admitted into the country two years ago.

The 22,491 refugees allowed into the U.S. last year was the lowest number since a modern resettlement system was passed into law by Congress in 1980.

Wow, imagine the message this sends out. I can almost hear asylum seekers from Central America packing their bags for the trip here as I speak.

All asylum laws need to be repealed, all requests denied in first interview by Border Patrol until then and seekers sent back out of the country at the border.

ICE Releasing Large Numbers Of Immigrant Families To Arizona Churches

    October 8, 2018
    Updated October 9, 2018

    Michel Marizco, Matthew Casey

The federal government quietly started releasing hundreds of undocumented immigrant families into the United States this past weekend, and social workers across Arizona described a chaotic process that started on Saturday.

Alma Bon, who works for Yuma Refugee Ministries, handled dozens of new families Monday morning.

“We heard rumors they were going to release them on the street,” Bon said. “So we started communicating, asking them what was going to happen."

Rather than turn people loose, the organization, and others in Tucson and Phoenix, worked with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to release families to the churches before they are set free to await immigration court hearings in the U.S.

In the Valley, Pastor Magdalena Schwartz said ICE reached out to her on Friday to ask for help making sure newly released immigrant families had somewhere to go while they wait to connect with relatives.

About 50 families, mostly from Central America, came to her church over the weekend, Schwartz said.

Now Schwartz is working with other faith leaders, preparing to feed and clothe even more families in the coming days. ICE did not tell her how many people will be released.

“All that they said, it’s a lot,” Schwartz said. “But they (did not) give me numbers.”

An ICE spokesperson emailed a statement:

“After decades of inaction by Congress, the government remains severely constrained in its ability to detain and promptly remove families that have no legal basis to remain in the United States. As a result, family units (FAMU) continue to cross the border at high volumes and are likely to continue to do so, as they face no consequence for their actions. Prior to releasing a FAMU within the time allotted by judicial decisions interpreting the Flores Settlement Agreement, ICE reviews their post-release plan, including ensuring they have a means to reach a final destination within the United States. This is a time and resource intensive process that can delay the release of a FAMU by several days while ICE confirms bus routes, coordinates with NGOs, and communicates with family members. There is no requirement that this review be conducted, it is a self-imposed process instituted by ICE.
“In light of the incredibly high volume of FAMUs presenting themselves along the Arizona border, ICE no longer has the capacity to conduct these reviews without risking violation of the Flores limitations on lengths of stay for minors in both (Customs and Border Protection) and ICE custody. To mitigate that risk, ICE began to curtail such reviews in Arizona beginning Sunday, Oct. 7.

“ICE has alerted local and state officials and reached out to (non-government organization) partners in the area who are prepared to provide assistance with transportation and/or other services. The safety of those in ICE’s custody remains the agency’s highest priority, with special attention paid to vulnerable populations. Release determinations will continue to be made on a case by case basis.”

There should be no tax dollars used in any refugee or asylum program, therefore, we should and must end all refugee and asylum programs. Just end them all. There is no authority for the US government to borrow from future generations of American citizens to pay for the subsistence of any non-citizen. It's just wrong on all levels across the board.

Furthermore, this craze of cross border and cross ocean migration has to end, world-wide. People need to stay put and build their own countries, fight for rights and freedoms, work hard with good work rules that properly compensate workers so they can live good, decent even prosperous lives while still ensuring nice profits for businesses who invest in the enterprises. All they have to do is do what we are doing here, there in their own countries. Whether they do or not is up to them, the same as it is for US. Now stay home and build your countries, take care of yourselves and your own families and country. DO NOT COME HERE.

I don't believe that. I noticed the article didn't give an actual breakdown of costs. Reminds me of a story I read a year or so ago about the U.S. Air Force spending $10,000 for aircraft toilet seats. Contractors like to milk the government for everything they can and unfortunately oversight on actual cost is very weak! The government is not frugal with our tax dollars, that's for sure.
