Homeland Security audit at Tom Cat Bakery started during Obama's administration — not Trump's

The Department of Homeland Security auditors mousing around the Tom Cat Bakery were sent by the Obama administration to verify the legal status of more than two dozen of its workers, a company spokesman told the Daily News.

The DHS audit that has about 30 of the bakery’s employees on the verge of dismissal didn’t start with President Trump — despite his promise to deport undocumented immigrants.

“It was initiated before the Trump inauguration,” a bakery spokesman told The News.

The bakery sent letters to some of its employees March 15 telling them they had to produce valid working papers within 10 days or risk being fired.

The letter blamed DHS for the I-9 audit — which requires employers to identify their workers and prove they're eligible to work in the country — but provided no details on how it got started.

The move panicked the workers, who rallied outside the bakery on March 22 to seek more information and to demand help saving their jobs.

Last week the bakery announced it had secured an extension from DHS for the workers.

Workers now have until April 21 to produce the required paperwork.

Tom Cat Bakery owners hope workers can use the extra time to build a defense if needed or get their papers in order.

“We don’t want to lose these people,” the company spokesman said. “The hope is that with the benefit of their own counsel they should be allowed to stay working for Tom Cat.”

News that the DHS audit was started under the Obama administration was a surprise to the workers and the elected officials and activists supporting them — who all suspected it was the result of Trump’s policies.

Man those government wheels sure turn slowly.

If ICE knows they're illegal, why not pick them up. Never will quite understand why we just let them get away so they can go a couple blocks or miles down the road to find another unscrupulous employer that will hire them. I say grab them now and ship 'em out. In the meantime let's pass an E-Verify bill that will be mandatory nationally.
