Border Patrol Agents in Texas Seize Marijuana Worth $1 Million Hidden Under Watermelons

Falfurrias, Texas — Border Patrol agents from the Rio Grande Valley Sector intercepted close to 1,500 pounds of marijuana at the Falfurrias Border Patrol Traffic Checkpoint on October 29. The contraband has an estimated value of over $1 million.

The seizure occurred when agents assigned to the Falfurrias Border Patrol traffic checkpoint observed a tractor-trailer enter the primary inspection area. While the primary agent performed an immigration check on the driver, a canine alerted to the trailer area and the driver was directed to the secondary inspection area.

A search of the trailer revealed 60 bundles of marijuana, weighing 1,448 pounds, concealed in a load of watermelons. The load of marijuana is worth $1,158,400. The driver, a United States Citizen from Robstown, Texas, was subsequently arrested.

The driver, vehicle and marijuana were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
