PedWest crossing temporarily closed as part of changes at the California-Mexico border

    (Peggy Peattie)

Changes will go in effect Sunday

    By ALEXANDRA MENDOZAWRITER

    APRIL 4, 2020 3:27 PM

SAN YSIDRO — U.S. Customs and Border Protection has made changes at ports of entry along the California-Mexico border, including the temporary closure of the PedWest pedestrian crossing, in response to decreases in traffic since the coronavirus-related restrictions to non-essential travel took place.

The changes will go in effect Sunday and will affect only passenger traffic. No adjustments are considered at the cargo/commercial ports of entry at this time, officials said.

The U.S. and Mexican governments entered a joint initiative on March 21 restricting non-essential travel along the border to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Pete Flores, director of field operations for CBP in San Diego, noticed a 70 percent decrease on traffic at all ports of entry from Mexico to California after that first weekend.

CBP said it might limit the number of open vehicle or pedestrian lanes while these changes remain in place. Some border commuters already noticed that some lanes at the San Ysidro Port of Entry were closed this past week during certain periods of the day, and wait times remain close to what is regularly expected.

“CBP will scale staffing based on anticipated workloads in an effort to expeditiously process essential travelers not impacted by the restriction and utilize our workforce tactfully,” officials said.
The changes taking effect Sunday and until further notice are:

At the San Ysidro Port of Entry:

    • San Ysidro will remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for pedestrian and vehicle processing northbound and southbound.
    • All pedestrian processing, both northbound and southbound, will now occur at the PedEast facility (near the trolley station). Processing will be suspended temporarily at the PedWest facility.

    Otay Mesa Port of Entry:

    • Otay Mesa will remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for pedestrian and vehicle processing northbound and southbound. There are no changes to cargo/commercial ports of entry.

    Tecate Port of Entry:

    • New hours of operation for both vehicle and pedestrian northbound and southbound crossings are from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. There are no changes to cargo/commercial ports of entry.

    Calexico Ports of Entry:

    • The Calexico West crossing will remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for pedestrian and vehicle processing northbound and southbound.
    • The Calexico East crossing will operate pedestrian and vehicle northbound and southbound crossings from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. There are no changes to cargo/commercial ports of entry.

    Andrade Port of Entry:

    • New hours of operation at pedestrian and vehicle northbound and southbound crossings are from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The border crossings remain open for U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, people with work visas, and those traveling for education or medical reasons, among other reasons deemed essential. Crossings are closed for recreational or tourism purposes.
