Brandon Darby: Border Patrol Agents Feel Betrayed by the Trump Administration

The Trump Administration rewarded Border Patrol agents for their support of Trump as president by picking an Obama holdover whom they despise to be their boss. Trump chose the Obama-hired Customs and Border deputy who was tasked with enacting Obama’s open border vision to lead the parent agency of Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection (CBP). All of the Border Patrol agents who spoke with Breitbart Texas Managing Director Brandon Darby from all nine Southwest border sectors expressed feeling betrayed or otherwise hurt by Trump choosing a man who did so much damage to them to be their new boss. Many expressed regret for having supported Trump in the first place and for having believed he would actually listen to them and care about what they experienced while risking their lives for other Americans.

The feelings of betrayal come just days after the announcement of Obama-hire Kevin McAleenan as the next Commissioner of CBP. While the organization that represents the agents, the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) has not spoken about the nomination, Darby spoke about how the line agents feel let down. His comments were made on the Texas radio show The Pursuit of Happiness.

“I know that Trump has promised to get the National Border Patrol Council and agents a large voice in what happens on the border,” Darby said. “ Last Friday he picked Kevin McAleenan, he nominated him to be the Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, the parent agency of Border Patrol.” During the show, Darby spoke on how McAleenan is not only a holdover from the Obama administration, but a key player during the previous administration’s push for a less secure border.

“He nominated this guy .. the problem is that this guy was hired by Barack Obama and was made deputy of [CBP] and all of the things we fought against on the border happened under this guy’s watch and he would have been the one responsible for implementing them. That’s DACA, DAPA and Catch and Release.” Darby said referring to some of the controversial programs started under the Obama administration.

Despite being an Obama holdover, McAleenan’s role appears to have been key in the implementation of those controversial programs, Darby said. “This is the guy who was picked by Barack Obama to enact Barack Obama’s open border policies.” he said.“This guy for some reason has been picked by Trump to be the boss of the border patrol agents who did so much and believed so much in Donald Trump.”

While the NBPC has not released any statements on the matter or had its members publicly discuss the issue, Darby said he has spoken with numerous other agents who are not NBPC leaders and have been key to helping Breitbart readers understand the realities of the southern border.

“Every single agent I have spoken with has been upset,” Breitbart Texas’ director said. “They tell me ‘We feel betrayed by the Trump Administration. We don’t understand how the Trump Administration could pick this person to be our boss after what we did.’ …I find it to be very concerning … I have not spoken to one who does not feel hurt, betrayed, let down about this.”

As Breitbart Texas initially reported, during the 2016 Republican Presidential Primaries, the NBPC publicly endorsed Trump. However, according to Darby, the current U.S. Border Patrol Chief Ronald Vitiello had tried to keep agents from doing so.

“When the NBPC was about to endorse Trump, Vitiello got on Twitter, he tweeted comparing Donald Trump to Dennis the Menace. I think it was an effort to get them not to support Trump.”

While Vitiello has since received public support from the NBPC, tensions appear to remain as line agents or boots on the ground appear to feel left out of the table in dealing with key decisions as to securing the border. According to Darby, during the heavily contested presidential primary, the NBPC endorsing Trump brought key support to his camp.

“I believe it was the Border Patrol agents who came out for him and put him over the edge to win the Republican nomination in the primary,” he said. “This is the first time they have endorsed a presidential candidate much less a candidate in the primary, These guys go all our for him and then for some reason he [Trump] puts someone who seemingly helped Obama try to destroy them and to open the border.”

Trump needs to look into this. I think Kelly is the one who actually picked this guy. Trump needs to get on this and fix it or explain it. And McAleenan, you better do your job to the letter and verse of President Trump's agenda. So far you've lost on two rounds of a simple E. O. that you worked on and that's the two travel ban E.O.'s to keep refugees out of our country for 120 days while we develop a proper vetting system for immigrants from 7 high-terrorism countries. That's two big fails on your part already.

I'm so sorry the Border Patrol agents feel betrayed in some way by this. I certainly understand where they're coming from. I'm sure Trump has a good reason, whether right or not, I know he made the decision to do the right thing and do a great job. If that is the wrong choice, we need to fix it right here, right now or Trump himself needs to explain what his thinking is to the Border Patrol agents.

The man does not need to be there. He must go if trust is to be regained. Drain the Swamp.

What a shame to put someone over the agents in leadership who they do not respect.. The agents feel betrayed like those of us who trusted the President to end DACA. It is mentioned in this article along with DAPA and "Catch and Release," and tied to this man who now leads them.

Maybe he's the reason DACA hasn't been ended yet. We need a full court press to get to the bottom of this one. This is so bad. BP agents were so excited and now they feel betrayed. This won't do. Something's run amok, I know President Trump doesn't want this, so we need to help BP Council spread the word and get it fixed.

kelly is a traitor - should be removed - Trump seems to go with what he is told to do on certain picks. He does not have as much control as one would think, therefore we still see ryan and others have a job.

Yes Judy, the agents were excited and they endorsed for the first time a Presidential candidate. I hope the President acknowledges the error and corrects it.

We must give Secretary John Kelly of Homeland Security a good deal of credit for DACA remaining in place according to him. McAleenan seems to have a similar mindset on DACA. These appointments appear to be failures on some enforcement measures that could be taken.

Trump hasn't appointed Kris Kobach to a position, hasn't rescinded DACA, has given mixed signals on amnesty, and now this. Not good.

Yeah, he needs to take some time to focus on this for a couple of days. He's been stretched for far and so thin, I think some things that are important to him are slipping through the cracks.

This is pertinent to the current news of what will happen with the caravan if it approaches as a group, asylum claims, etc.

Obama holdover, Kevin McAleenan, spoke today during the announcement about a 5,000 plus military support to the Border Patrol. Listening to him closely, it appears that the foreign citizens may line up nicely at the ports of entry and be allowed to enter and claim asylum even though they rejected it in Mexico.

McAleenan should be replaced. He is not an "America First" type leader.

Senior Editor of Breitbart Texas, Brandon Darby, drew some attention to an Obama-era holdover named Kevin McAleenan this week on a Texas radio show. McAleenan has had border patrol agents’ feathers ruffled for some time, per Breitbart.

2008 Republican Convention activities

In 2008, Darby infiltrated a small group of protestors at the 2008 Republican National Convention, while working as an FBI informant and subsequently took the stand against them in court. Two of the protestors, David McKay and Bradley Crowder, were serving jail sentences as of late 2011.[12]

Darby started working as an FBI informant in November 2007,[13] which Darby acknowledged and justified in a December 2008 open letter to his former fellow community organizers and activists.[14]

Darby infiltrated groups that organized protests at the 2008 Republican National Convention in Saint Paul, Minnesota, giving the FBI information which led to the seizure of 34 homemade riot shields brought from Texas.[15] Two activists from Texas, David McKay and Bradley Crowder, then purchased materials for and constructed firebombs (Molotov cocktails) that they appear to have contemplated using on state owned vehicles. Evidence of the firebombs was seized in a raid by local police which was in turn supported by the FBI, and so the key issue of further criminality by McKay and Crowder was whether Darby encouraged this escalation in violence.[12] Specific claims by others in attendance at the protest (e.g., Gabby Hicks) state that Darby was "... the one to suggest violence, when the rest of us clearly disagreed..." and that "[a]s an older seasoned activist, Darby had a lot of sway over Crowder and McKay, making them susceptible to his often militant rhetoric"[16] i.e. that he acted as an agent provocateur. As well, a former Darby girlfriend and various former colleagues allege that Darby informed for the FBI not due to patriotism or altruism, but for self-serving motives.[16]
