CIUDAD JUAREZ (Reuters) - Bewildered, sad and disappointed, Brazilians migrants sent from the United States to Mexico this week were left wondering how they had ended up in another country whose language they do not understand.

The United States on Wednesday began sending some Brazilian migrants who had crossed the border with Mexico back there to await their U.S. court hearings under a program known as the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP).

It is one of several moves by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump aimed at reducing the number of people seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. Since the program began a year ago, more than 57,000 non-Mexican migrants have been returned to Mexico.

"I don't understand why I was sent here," said Brazilian migrant Tania Costa, adding that she did not understand Spanish and had been unable to communicate with Mexican officials.

"Why did they return me to Mexico and not Brazil?"

She said U.S. officials had not explained to her that she would be sent to Mexico. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ten Brazilian migrants were sent to Mexico under MPP on Wednesday, according to Enrique Valenzuela, who heads the civil protection services in Chihuahua state. The program was previously limited to Spanish speakers.

Among them were Costa and her six-year old daughter. They had left Belo Horizonte in the southwestern state Minas Gerais, Brazil just over a week ago, she said.

"I had heard of people who managed, so I tried as well," she said. "I had a court date, everything was scheduled, but they didn't let me stay there."

She was getting death threats because of her inability to pay her debt, she said, and that she had no job. "They said since we don't want to go back to Brazil, because we're being threatened, then we have to return to Mexico," she said.

U.S. Border Patrol caught roughly 17,900 Brazilians at the southwestern border with Mexico in the last fiscal year, which began Oct. 1, 2018. The figure was a sharp increase from 1,500 arrests a year earlier.

"I would like to return to the United States," said Costa. "They gave us a court date, but in April. And we have no way to get back to Brazil."

The U.S. taxpayers are NOT her Travel Agent or Uber Driver to send her back to Brazil.

Mexico let her in and she can work in Mexico and save up the money for HER and her daughters transportation back home! I do not want to pay for her FREE trip back to Brazil.

They come here and KNOW & EXPECT to get a free ride back home! This needs to stop!

Send flyers to these countries "DO NOT COME HERE"! You will not get a "free" ride back home and you will not be allowed to enter our country.

Violence and poverty is NOT a reason for asylum. Go relocate back home where you came from and change your identity. These liars do that all the time. Many resorts in Mexico she can go work at!!!

I do not care where the heck "she does not want to go". We do not want these illegals pouring over our border! Entire cities are coming across.

SEND THEM ALL BACK AND MEXICO NEEDS TO REFUSE THEM ENTRY AT THEIR SOUTHERN BORDER!

Brazilians sent to Mexico left in confusion

Migrants from Brazil hoping to start a new life in the U.S. are now being sent to Mexico, disappointed and bewildered to find themselves in a country whose language they don't understand.

It's all part of an expansion of a Trump administration program called Migrant Protection Protocols, or MPP. Among the first batch of Portuguese speakers sent across the southern border: Tania Costa and her six year-old daughter.

(SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) BRAZILIAN MIGRANT, TANIA COSTA, SAYING: "I'm very sad, thinking about why I have been sent here.

I was already in the U.S., so why send me to Mexico? Why not Brazil?

There was a court process and everything but I wasn't allowed to stay. I was sent to Mexico. I'm not Mexican." MPP requires asylum seekers who cross the southern border to go back to Mexico as their cases make their way through the U.S. court system.

The program is one of several policies from U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration aimed at slashing the number of asylum seekers at the border. More than 57,000 non-Mexican migrants have been sent back since the program began a year ago.

But until this week, it's been limited to Spanish speakers. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security made the announcement Wednesday (January 29) citing a sharp spike in the number of Brazilians arrested at the border. The DHS also noted that the program was not limited to one nationality or language. A Mexican official said the Brazilians will be taken in at a government-run shelter and provide with an interpreter.
