The Latest: Suspect worked at farm tied to Republican farmer
0
The Associated Press21 Aug 20181MONTEZUMA, Iowa (AP) — The Latest on an arrest and charges in the death of Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts (all times local):
9:15 p.m.
The immigrant from Mexico charged in the kidnapping and murder of an Iowa college student worked at a dairy farm owned by the family of a prominent state Republican leader.
Yarrabee Farms said in a statement that Cristhian Bahena Rivera had worked at its farms for the last four years and was an employee in good standing. The company said it was shocked to hear that Rivera had been charged in the death of 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts.
Spokesman Dane Lang said Tuesday night that Yarrabee Farms is a “small family farm” owned by him and his father, Craig Lang, who has long been a prominent Iowa farmer and political figure.
Craig Lang previously served as president of the Iowa Farm Bureau and president of the Iowa Board of Regents, which governs the state’s public universities. In June, he lost a close GOP primary in the race for state agriculture secretary.
Rivera was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder in Tibbetts’ death.

08-21-2018, 11:04 PM #22Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds speaks to the media in May in Hiawatha. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
JOHNSTON — President Donald Trump has suggested congressional Republicans put off addressing immigration policy reform until after the November elections, but Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds hopes they do not wait that long.
Reynolds wants federal lawmakers and the president to develop new immigration policy immediately.
“It’s really time, I think, that we have Congress and we have the administration sit down and find solutions and find some common ground and get something done,” Reynolds said. “I think that they should do it now. It’s time to get something done.”
Reynolds reiterated she would not deploy Iowa National Guard troops to the southern U.S. border if it meant they would be assisting federal immigration agents in the separation of children from their families.
But she said she would consider a request to help agents address immigration-related issues like the illegal trafficking of children or drugs.
She does not think any Iowa cities are in violation of a new state law, set to go into effect July 1, which threatens to withhold state funding to local governments that do not cooperate with federal immigration agents.
“I don’t think it’s unreasonable,” she said. “One of my No. 1 responsibilities is to make sure that we keep Iowans safe. And I don’t think it’s unreasonable if somebody that’s here and they’ve broken the law and they have been apprehended, that it’s unreasonable to send them back..”
Reynolds distanced herself from multiple inflammatory comments made the past two weeks by U.S. Rep. Steve King, the western Iowa Republican congressman and a co-chair of Reynolds’ campaign.
King a week ago reposted on social media an immigration opinion piece by a self-described Nazi sympathizer. On Friday, King reposted a picture of what the original poster said were young Hispanic boys of detained parents, with his own comment that the boys appear to be old enough to be tried as criminals, serve in the military or become gang members.
Also on Friday, King said in a radio interview he does not want Somali Muslims working in Iowa pork plants because, he said, they wouldn’t eat pork themselves based on religious objections and would be hoping whoever does eat it will go to hell.
Iowa Democrats have criticized Reynolds for keeping King as a co-chair for her campaign.
She said Friday she does not plan to remove King as a campaign supporter in part because he represents roughly a quarter of the state. But she said she does not agree with King’s comments and added he is not involved in campaign policy discussions.
“We’re not going to agree on everything,” Reynolds said. “I make it clear when asked where I stand on specific issues, and I’ll continue to do that.”

Kim Reynolds: 'Horrific' that children are being used as pawns in immigration policy battle
Gov. Kim Reynolds said Tuesday the U.S. government should stop treating children as “pawns” in the immigration policy battle and put an end to its policy of separating children from their families who have entered the country illegally.

Well, I still haven't seen this on the news here in the Chicago area yet. When this young woman was killed, it was on all the time. Now that they found out an illegal alien murdered her, it's never mentioned. I admit that I missed the World News last night, but before that I watched the local new for an hour from 4pm to 5pm, and no mention of it. Later I watched both the 9 o'clock news AND the 10 o'clock news. Still, no mention of it. I watched the news for an hour this morning. Again, no mention of it.

SAD!! Our media is so corrupt, so vile. Disgusting. They're not covering the killer because Chicago is a sanctuary city and protects criminal illegal aliens, even when they murder Americans. Despicable. I don't know when if ever the media has sunk so low. Trump is absolutely right to keep attacking them. The news is all over Fox News of course, so sad and tragic that Chicago media doesn't think it should be reported.

When it comes to gun laws, democrats always say....."even if we can save one life". We need to throw this in their face when it comes to situations like this and illegal immigration.
"We need to deport all illegals aliens, even if we can save one American life from murderous criminal illegal aliens."
And let me stress, Mexico isn't exactly sending us their best and brightest. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if they emptied their prisons and told them that they are free only if they leave the country never to come back. I wouldn't be one bit surprised.

Mollie Tibbetts murder suspect Cristhian Bahena Rivera passed background check: employers | abc7.com
August 22, 2018
After 24-year-old Cristhian Bahena Rivera was charged for the murder of college student Mollie Tibbetts on Tuesday, the family-owned business where he worked said they were shocked.
"This individual has worked at our farms for four years, was vetted through the government's E-Verify system, and was an employee in good standing," Yarrabee Farms said in the statement. "On Monday, the authorities visited our farm and talked to our employees. We have cooperated fully with their investigation."
Rivera is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, and it is unclear how he passed the background check. E-Verify is an online system through which the government checks job applicants' backgrounds for employers. This search includes records from the Department of Homeland Security, which Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) falls under, to ensure the applicant is legally allowed to work.
Yarrabee Farms is owned by the family of Craig Lang, a prominent Republican in the state. The company operates dairy farms in hills outside of Brooklyn, where Tibbetts lived. A representative from the company told the Associated Press that they were shocked by the news.
Rivera has been living in the United States between 4 and 7 years, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He had no prior criminal history in Iowa, according to AP.
The suspect has reportedly confessed to the July 18 murder. He told investigators that he "blocked" his memory and does not remember the moment he harmed Tibbetts, but he does remember removing her bloodied body from his car trunk and leaving her in a corn field.
Lang has served as the president of the Iowa Farm Bureau and as president of the Iowa Board of Regents. The Board of Regents oversees the state's public universities, including Tibbetts' school, the University of Iowa. Lang also launched an unsuccessful run earlier this year to become the state's Secretary of Agriculture.
The Associated Press and ABC News contributed to this story.
