Santorum: Block Muslim immigration from radical countries
William Petroski, 11:54 a.m. CST December 8, 2015
NEVADA, Ia. – Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum said Tuesday he favors halting the immigration of Muslims to the United States from countries that back Islamic extremists until better methods are developed to screen out radicals who could commit terrorist acts here.
Santorum, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, said he would focus a ban on Muslim immigration on people coming from the Middle East and North Africa, including Syria, Libya, Yemen and certain other countries that have large populations of radicalized Muslims.
“I think that there are countries where we should not be bringing in people. Obviously, we should not be bringing in Muslims from those countries. I am not worried about radicalized Christians from Yemen, but I am worried about radicalized Muslims from those countries,” Santorum told reporters after touring the Lincolnway Energy plant in central Iowa's Story County.
Santorum’s remarks came in the wake of a statement by fellow Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Monday that he would prevent Muslims, including would-be immigrants, students, tourists and other visitors, from entering the country following last week's mass slayings in San Bernardino, Calif., by two Muslims whom authorities said were radicalized.
Santorum said he agrees with Trump that the U.S. has no way of properly screening Muslims to determine if they are radicalized, which he described as a “serious, serious issue.” While many people have criticized Trump, Santorum said those people have ignored the fact that President Barack Obama is not keeping Americans safe.
“Everything is not fine. Everything is not going to be fine,” Santorum said. The idea that Muslims can enter the U.S. from certain countries where radical views are common without doing adequate background checks “is not sustainable,” he added.
Santorum, a Roman Catholic, also said his stance on blocking the immigration of Muslims from certain nations is not contrary to his strong constitutional support of religious liberties.
“The people who are attacking us are Muslims. They are not Christians. Not all Muslims are jihadists obviously. But we need a way to determine whether they have been radicalized, and we need a system in place to make sure that we can determine that or not, and we don’t. That has nothing to do with religious tolerance and religious liberty,” he said.

I hope that Rick Santorum can climb in the polls and eventually become part of the Trump / Cruz administration.
