President Bush recently met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Bush admonished Putin to listen to the Russian people and pursue real Democratic reforms. It was more than a little hypocritical of Bush, considering the fact that he completely ignores the overwhelming opinion of Americans. We have been crying out for immigration reform and border protection for years, yet our president refuses to hear our pleas.

A CNN Poll taken in 2004 asked the question: "Do you believe heightened border security should be a part of immigration reform?" No less than 89 percent of those responding to the question gave a resounding "YES." In fact, it is difficult to find any poll on illegal immigration taken within the last two years, that does not show between 80 and 90 percent of Americans want a dramatic change in U.S. policy towards the growing crisis.

Illegal immigration is placing an incredible strain on this country. A few years ago, the effects of the crisis could only be seen in the border states. In the American Southwest, Mexican illegal immigrants have stretched the public schools, emergency and social services to the breaking point. Many hospitals is that region have been brought to the brink of bankruptcy as a direct result of illegal immigration. Upon examination of the high crime rates, gang activity, and even the poisoning of rancher's cattle, the once pristine Southwest can now be deemed a "war zone."

However, the problem of illegal immigration is no longer a regional-crisis. It is in fact, a national-crisis. From Los Angeles, CA. to Long Island, NY, Americans are being placed on the front lines of this daily invasion.

In 2002, two Somerville, MA girls (ages 14 and 17) were raped by members of the Salvadoran gang known as MS-13. The girls are both deaf and one of the girls suffers from cerebral palsy. All of the men arrested for the crime were illegal aliens. The spread of Latin American gangs can now be seen in major cities across the country.

In 2002, a young Detroit, MI girl named Tricia Taylor was struck by a car driven by an illegal alien named Jose Carcamo. The 18 year old Taylor, lost both of her legs in the accident. Carcamo was drunk and drag racing, when he lost control of his vehicle that struck Taylor. Carcamo is from El Salvador and has been living in this country illegally for man years. He reportedly has 17 moving violations, dating back to 1995. In 2003, Carcamo received a prison sentence of 3-5 years for the DUI that so dramatically altered Tricia Taylor's life. Taylor stated shortly after the sentencing: "I have my whole life with no legs... I'm only 18. He gets no forgiveness."

Such tragic events are taking place all over the United States. Latin American drug dealers are now operating in our nation's capital. Yet President Bush seems to be ignorant of the problem. How many innocent American lives will have to ruined or lost before our president takes notice?

The United States is the only major power in the history of the world, whose government simply refuses to protect it's own borders. One would think that if at no other time, the need for border protection would be a priority during The War on Terror. Bush however, has chosen to protect his nation with color-coded graphs and politically correct airport-screeners.

Recently, Homeland Security Department official James Loy told the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee: "Several al-Qaida leaders believe operatives can pay their way into the country through Mexico, and also believe illegal entry is more advantageous than legal entry for operational security reasons."

It will take another "9/11" type of attack for our supposedly conservative president to get serious about border protection. Still, that will only happen if it is discovered that the perpetrators gained entry into this country, by way of our virtually open border with Mexico.

This spring, a civilian group called the Minuteman Project will begin to patrol the U.S.-Mexican border along a 40 mile stretch of the Arizona border. Of course, the U.S. government opposes the action. The group's leader Jim Glichrist recently said: " I felt the only way to get something done was to do it yourself." The Minutemen currently number 500 volunteers who are ready to deploy along the border in April.

The fact that citizens must take time away from their families and work to protect our own sovereign border, displays the incredible frustration felt by so many Americans. The job of protecting our border from foreign invaders belongs to the federal government. However, they have shirked their duty.

President Bush often criticizes foreign leaders for their failure to live by true democratic ideals. The American people have begged Bush to protect the border. Thus far, he has failed to do so. In fact, he seems to be more concerned with the welfare of Mexicans than he does with that of his own countrymen. Do you think he understands the oath he has twice taken?

Perhaps our fearless leader should take his own advice!
