    Bush in UpHill Fight...

Bush Immigration Reform Faces Uphill Fight

    LINK to Story

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush's proposed overhaul of immigration laws faces diminishing prospects in a Congress already wary of his top domestic priority, revising Social Security, analysts said on Thursday.
Bush seemed to acknowledge the difficulties facing his plan to give temporary work permits to illegal immigrants, when he discussed the issue on Wednesday after meeting Mexican President Vicente Fox and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin.

Addressing Fox, Bush said: "Mr. President, you've got my pledge I'll continue working on it. You don't have my pledge that Congress will act, because I'm not a member of the legislative branch."

Bush's comments amount to an admission that his reform proposals are not advancing in the Republican-controlled Congress, said Steve Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies, which opposes the president's plan and calls for reduced immigration.

"I think Bush now understands there isn't much support for what he wants to do. There are very powerful Republican committee heads who are not interested in pursuing it and Bush doesn't seem willing so far to expend much political capital on it," Camarota said.

The president's plan is effectively dead for this Congress, a senior Republican Senate aide said.

"Bush can't do both immigration and Social Security reform and he has his hands full with Social Security. He's losing water on that one and he can't infuriate the grass-roots of our party on immigration in the leadup to congressional mid-term elections next year," the aide said.

Bush was personally committed to the reform but might have to wait until the final two years of his term to move forward, said the aide, who asked not to be identified.

    TEMPORARY PERMITS

Under Bush's plan, illegal immigrants could obtain work permits for three years, renewable for another three years, to do jobs U.S. citizens did not want.

Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain and Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy are trying to draft legislation that would embody Bush's proposals. But the real problem is in the House of Representatives, where sentiment among majority Republicans seems to be increasingly anti-immigrant.

"Every conservative talk show host has latched on to this issue and is running with it, demanding that we enforce the borders and enforce the law," said Rick Oltman of Federation for American Immigration Reform, which advocates cutting legal immigration and clamping down on illegal migration. ==================================
We have NOT won. Those postcards only cost 25cents.. they have to continue. But please notice that McCain and Kennedy are in bed together. I like that like I like pet rattlesnakes. Kennedy is the guy who thought up the almost 1,000,000 man immigration policy back there in the 1970's. What those two people are dreaming up is beyond me, but if I don't read it, and have it analyzed for me, I don't want it, and probably don't want it anyway.

I think we should continue fighting amnesty. And it would seem to me that would be the very best we could do. But it may be time to add something to this mix... such as a national referendum on immigration in the coming national elections.

    What say you?

    Illegal Immigration Bits and Pieces

    by AuntB

Earlier this month Dennis Miller, MSNBC, had Rep. Jane Harmon as a guest. After giving the typical politically correct mantra about border security and illegal immigration, Dennis replied thusly:

“What if the populace of this country tells you that, in fact, we just DO want a wall down there at the Mexican border?

See, I don’t think that infringes on the “melting pot. You know the melting pot is ingredients that we CHOOSE to put in at some point.
“Ingredients don’t march up to the melting pot and jump in any time they want. It screws the whole recipe up!

    End quote.....

I encourage you to email Mr. Miller and encourage him to keep up the good words on this issue.

Lou Dobbs (airs 3/24/05) has another great show tonight on “broken borders. Vice President Cheney was on the road plugging social security reform when asked about the southern border. He admits there are terrorist threats and too many illegals coming across the border, but his answer to the problem is the Presidents guest worker/amnesty vision.

    Take the poll !

Are you offended by Vice President Cheney's response to the United States' illegal alien crisis?

"I think Bush now understands there isn't much support for what he wants to do."
    Well, DUH
You mean the light finally went on?

"Bush can't do both immigration and Social Security reform and he has his hands full with Social Security. He's losing water on that one and he can't infuriate the grass-roots of our party on immigration in the leadup to congressional mid-term elections next year," the aide said. "
After all, he has managed to infuriate most of the American public.
I am afraid to ask what else he might have in his hands.

"Bush was personally committed to the reform but might have to wait until the final two years of his term to move forward, said the aide, who asked not to be identified."
Committed? Now THAT is an option.

"Every conservative talk show host has latched on to this issue and is running with it, demanding that we enforce the borders and enforce the law," said Rick Oltman"
Now we need Washington to latch on.

No, of course we have not won. We have not won until we get legislation on paper...and enforcement in practice. Words won't do this time around. Action is the ONLY acceptable end to this battle. Else, we shall just face it again as long as snakes like McCain and Kennedy are in office...wonder what we can do about THAT?

Good article below, and I do not support free trade at all costs. In fact, if we look around, we find other countries that are not interested in growing, and the harmony of the society is pretty high. Not only that.. they are in pretty good financial shape. So a questions arises... is this immigration thing a way to cover the fact that the United States is very badly managed economically?

    Free trade at all costs?

    http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/lou.dobbs.tonight/

The Bush administration is trying to push the Central American Free Trade Agreement through Congress quickly and quietly. The White House, however, couldn't find the votes for this so-called free trade agreement before his re-election in the fall, and the president likely doesn't have the votes for it now. And that's a good thing for American workers.

    ==============================

I really think we two prongs now. No to Amnesty and we want a National Referendum on Immigration at the next election.

It's amazing to me, but it seems to me that Bush is already a lameduck president. He can't get his amnesty through, nobody wants to touch his social security policies and it looks like his Central American Free Trade ripoffs are now dead in the water too (which is amazing considering that about a year ago Congress was passing free trade pacts with third world countries like it was candy, now it's not happening). So what else is the president going to try to push? I doubt he gets his permanent tax cuts for the rich past. He might even lose the battles on prescription drugs and NCLB. Nobody in congress outside of some leftwing kooky Dems and a few fake Republicans want to even touch Bush's policies. It would be one thing if he had some good ideas, but his guest worker amnesty plan has to be the most unpopular plan ever cooked up as a president.

I think the Republicans especially in the House are finally starting to realize that siding with Bush and his dangerous policies will not be a political winner come next years elections. Look there is too much info out on this issue already and the Republicans know they can't get away with passing another amnesty. Too many people are fed up already.

President Bush when he got reelected thought he had all of this unlimited political capital that he could just pass whatever policy he wanted and it didn't matter if he shafted his base or not. Not realizing of course that he spent most of his political capital on Iraq. Then he has the audacity to push his amnesty down our throats a week after his reelection. Sorry Bush, but you just wasted whatever political capital you thought you had after that brillant move. Now nobody wants to work with Bush on any policies because everyone knows he's not to be trusted.

Have you noticed that almost all of Bush's policy decisions during his two terms have benefitted big business and Mexican interest only? I have yet to see any of his policies that benefitted the American people other than the Patriot Act.

I hate to say it, but this president is worst then Clinton ever was and that's hard for me to say because I despised Clinton, but even I don't think Clinton would have been this bad. I think after a while Clinton would have told Fox after his many a rantings that he needs to chill out. At least we didn't have a running deficit under Clinton, unlike with this clown.

I see the Republican party distancing themselves and rebelling from this clown. I worry more about Bush teaming up with the Dems and a few fake Republicans then I do seeing the Republican party as a whole passing his amnesty plan. The political pressure is just too great.

I still won't let my guard down and you can count on me to tell congress to say No to Amnesty and yes to immigration and border enforcement. In fact I will get a chance to tell them personally come late April.

    AuntB,

That's hilarious! What a good analogy by Miller. He should point out that the melting pot is at the boiling point and will soon boil over if the lid isn't put on things.

Hey .. maybe he'll take up that idea and quote me.

Europe has said Globalization was a bad idea when it began, and it is dead now. And I was thinking about OSHA from the get go. No OSHA in Mexico.. how do we compete unless we start throwing saftey rules away. NOT good.

So OHSA in Mexico and in China. But add this to China: the government controls the wage scale. Does this country want to control the wages that we may compete with China? I hope not.. money to me, but this country would not do well at all.

We may need globalization. We need that with countries that have safety rules in their factories, and run an open economy. And above all.. the government we are working with has to be NONE corrupt.

We can edge around some of this, but we cannot edge around most of this. It was a bad idea I think.
