Presidential press secretary Scott McClellan today appeared to blame President Bill Clinton for budget deficits and the flow of illegal aliens into the U.S., saying President Bush is now getting a handle on the problems.

At today's press briefing, McClellan noted the growth of "non-security discretionary spending" is down under Bush's watch.

Asked WND: "Is the president concerned that he is alienating his conservative base by nominating Ms. Miers, by allowing so much illegal immigration for five years, increasing the federal budget deficit, and not vetoing a single piece of legislation?"

McClellan responded: "This president has significantly reduced the growth in non-security discretionary spending. If you look at where we were when we came into office, the budget the year before we came into office had increased that funding some 15 percent.

"Now, his No. 1 responsibility is to protect the American people, and we're going to make sure that we have the resources we need to carry out and win the war on terrorism, and to secure the homeland. We live in a very dangerous world. We are a nation at war, and we have obligations that we must meet. But as we do, it's important to look at where there is unnecessary spending in our budget and to go after that spending and cut it. And that's what he's committed to doing. That's what he's done throughout this administration."

Added McClellan: "We also, of course, when we came into office, had the recession hitting, and we had to address an important economic need, and that meant cutting taxes and getting more money in people's pockets so we could get the economy growing again. And it is growing again, strongly."

The spokesman then addressed the issue of illegal aliens flowing into the U.S., again referring to the period before Bush took office.

"It is a serious problem in this country, yes," stated McClellan. "The president has not been satisfied with the results. He talked about that yesterday in his remarks. But this is a problem that has been building up for some time, well before we were in office. It's a problem that he has a plan for addressing in a comprehensive way. That's why we really need to look at it in that manner.

"Now, we need to continue to take steps to protect our borders and strengthen our borders to keep people who are coming here for the wrong reason from entering this country. We also need to make sure we're enforcing our immigration laws, and that there is strong interior enforcement. But we also need to make sure – and this is an important way to address an immigration problem that exists in this country – that we move forward in a realistic way to address an important economic need. And that's what the president is talking about when he talks about matching willing workers with willing employers. And this will help us address this problem."

Another reporter followed up WND's question with McClellan, saying, "What about the concern over alienating conservatives, though? The question started with conservative – alienating conservatives."

Responded McClellan: "Look at the record."

WND also asked McClellan about reports that high-court nominee Harriet Miers has pledged support for outlawing abortion in all cases except when the mother's life is in danger, asking if the president shared her belief that there should be just one exception justifying the procedure.

"The president is pro-life, with three exceptions, and that's been his position all along," McClellan said. Those exceptions are life of the mother, rape and incest, the spokesman confirmed to WND after the briefing.

Is this guy smoking crack? Non-discretionary spending is down under Bush's watch? I don't think so. Please read this:

    http://www.cato.org/pubs/tbb/tbb-0510-26.pdf

Apparently Bush is the biggest spender ever, even more so then LBJ. Clinton wasn't even in the top 5. Even if you break it down to only non-discretionary spending, Bush still beats all of the other top 5 big spending presidents by a mile. Don't think you can blow that smoke up this patriots back side.

Bottomline is Jorge that Bill Clinton was president almost 6 years ago. You have been in charge since then with a Republican majority in both houses of congress. You need to take responsibility for your own actions and stop blaming others for your stupidity.

This a--clown can't be impeached fast enough.

"You need to take responsibility for your own actions and stop blaming others for your stupidity."

This will happen when pigs fly, or when georgie grows up.

It has happened, we have a self absorbed recalcitrant child for president. The republican't party is the enabler, the democrats the unqualified day care. No wonder he pees his pants constantly. cheers glenn
