Nogales, Ariz. - Customs and Border Protection at the Nogales port of entry had a busy Columbus Day holiday weekend as they stopped 28 attempts of illegal entry into the United States and arrested three people for warrants.

From Friday, October 10, through Monday, October 13, Customs and Border Protection officers stopped 28 attempts of illegal entry into the United States by using fraudulent documents or falsely claiming US citizenship.

Of those 28 attempts, one person apprehended was a prior deported felon who previously served time in a U.S. prison for possession and transportation of an illegal substance with the intent to distribute. The man, a Mexican national, attempted to make entry by presenting a border crossing card that did not belong to him. The CBP officer noticed the picture on the crossing card did not resemble the man and referred him for further questioning. Additional questioning and scanning the man’s fingerprints through IAFIS revealed his true identity. He is currently being detained pending court proceedings.

The others were all processed for immigration violations and returned to Mexico.

CBP officers also foiled two alien smuggling attempts. The two separate cases involved a man and a woman who attempted to smuggle two male juveniles into the United States. In both cases, the man and the woman were arrested and are awaiting prosecution by the Assistant United States Attorney. The juveniles were turned over to the Mexican Consulate to be reunited with their families.

Three others were also arrested for outstanding warrants from Arizona and New Mexico on shoplifting and failure to appear, and a missing juvenile from California. All three were turned over to the state and local authorities for further processing.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
