Rep. Paul Kanjorski (D-Pa.) was caught on a year-old video clip telling some of his constituents that Congressional Democrats oversold their ability to end the war during the 2006 campaign.

"We really in this last election - when I say we, the Democrats -- I think pushed it as far as we can, the envelope. Didn't say it, but we implied it -- that we, if we won the Congressional elections, we could stop the war,â€

GOP raps Kanjorski for saying Dems 'stretched the facts'

    WASHINGTON -
A video clip has surfaced of U.S. Rep. Paul Kanjorski saying that Democrats "sort of stretched the facts" before the 2006 election by implying the party could end the Iraq war.

Kanjorski, a 12-term Democrat from northeast Pennsylvania, said: "We didn't say it, but we implied it, that we if we won the congressional elections, we could stop the war. Now anybody who was a good student of government knew that wasn't true. But you know, the temptation to want to win back the Congress, we sort of stretched the facts."

Kanjorski made the comments at a town hall meeting in Ashley, Pa., in August. Republicans on Friday circulated a link to the video clip, which was posted Thursday on the video-sharing Web site YouTube.

Kanjorski, 71, handily won re-election two years ago when Democrats swept control of the House and Senate.

This election, he faces an opponent with name recognition who was hand-picked by the Republican Party. The challenger, Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta, became a national hero among those seeking tighter borders after he embarked on a local crackdown of illegal immigration.

Barletta said in a phone interview that Kanjorski betrayed voters' trust.

"He has indicted himself and the entire Democratic Party by admitting to purposely deceive the American people in order to take control of Congress," Barletta said.

Kanjorski said in a statement Friday that, when he spoke at the town hall meeting, he was sharing the frustrations of his constituents that the war in Iraq was continuing.

"I expressed my belief that some Democrats in 2006 overestimated the ability of a single house of Congress to end the war, particularly in the face of an intransigent president and Senate Republicans who are committed to continuing the war," Kanjorski said.

He also added that it's time for the United States to "execute a sensible withdrawal plan."
