Assemblyman Bob Huff Introduces Illegal Immigration Reform Package

    California Political Desk
    March 05, 2008

Sacramento, CA (March 5, 200 – California has become "home" to an estimated three million illegal immigrants who have crossed the state´s porous borders seeking work and a better life. Many residing here illegally, including those who break laws not related to immigration, have created a drain on tax-funded benefits reserved for American citizens and legal immigrants. Assemblyman Bob Huff has introduced a package of five common sense bills to help address this growing problem.

AJR 44 – A bill circulating in Congress would repeal the section of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution allowing for birthright citizenship. This federal policy has resulted in citizenship for babies born in the United States to foreign visitors, and illegal immigrants. This lax policy has served to attract illegal immigrants looking for an easy way to claim state and federal benefits without going through the legal citizenship process. AJR 44 will urge Congress to pass that bill, and stop ignoring the crime of illegal immigration.

AB 2418 – This bill will deny bail to any illegal immigrant that has been charged with a gang-related crime or a violent felony. AB 2418 will ensure that illegal immigrant criminals receive the punishment they deserve for crimes committed and stop them from jumping bail to flee to their home country to avoid prosecution.

AB 2420 – San Francisco and Los Angeles have declared themselves "sanctuary cities," prohibiting their local authorities from cooperating with federal immigration officials. AB 2420 will stop local entities and authorities from establishing themselves as "sanctuary cities," eliminating conflicting governmental policies.

AB 2421 – Due to the federal government´s inability and ineffectiveness to enforce immigration laws at the state level, AB 2421 outlines a business license revocation process for employers who hire illegal immigrants within California.

AB 2422 – This bill will require that local authorities report juveniles who have been charged with a violent felony to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to ensure the dangerous juvenile is deported back to their home country. While it is difficult to find and deport illegal immigrants, those who commit violent felonies should be swiftly deported.

"While a comprehensive solution to illegal immigration must come from the federal government, it is time to stop wringing our hands, and adopt these common sense illegal immigration reform bills which will reduce the negative impacts of illegal immigrants on our society and state budget," stated Assemblyman Huff.

This is fantastic I must send Bob Huff a letter of support for his efforts. Now, if we could get rid of all the ethno-centric politicians in this state we may have half a chance.

As John Stossel would say, "GIVE ME A BREAK"!!! The place is blanketed with them. The difficulty is they do not WANT to find or deport them.

Interesting. Thanks for posting this ShockedinCalifornia.

Hadn't heard of him but I guessed he must be from southern Mexifornia and sure enough he is.

This state is complex but it really ought to be split into two states, north and south imo.

Assemblyman Bob Huff has introduced legislation which would deny bail to any person charged with a violent felony or gang-related crime that is found to be in the United States illegally. AB 2418 will require the presiding judge in such a defendant’s bail hearing to determine their citizenship status.

Assemblyman Huff: Serious About Illegal Aliens

Wednesday 5 March 2008, by admin

Some legislators great great speeches about ending the flood of illegal aliens. Others vote right on bills that stop support for illegal aliens. Some legislators vote right, speak well and provide legislation to help California families and businesses.

GOP Assemblyman is one of the few legislators that speak well, vote right and provide needed legislation to end the flood of illegal aliens in the State.

Look at the list of bills. Send this article to your friends and family. Enlist their support in getting Sacramento to do the right thing. Send this to your elected offiicals, ask them to support each bill, or demand to now why they prefer to protct illegal laines instead of helping honest families.

Call talk radio and write a letter to the editor. Get involved, the future is yours, if we can roll back the illegal alien use of our resources. Get angry or get poor.

    5-bill package targets illegals

Huff's legislation aimed at migrants said unlikely to pass
    By Bethania Palma, Staff Writer
Article Launched: 03/15/2008 10:06:00 PM PDT

A package of Assembly bills aimed at discouraging illegal immigration is circulating the Assembly, though none of the five measures is likely to become legislation.
The bills, authored by Assemblyman Bob Huff, R-Diamond Bar, aim to revoke the constitutional birthright to citizenship for children whose parents are not U.S. citizens and eliminate other rights for undocumented immigrants.

"Most people don't think that just because you happen to be in this country and have a baby, it should be a citizen," Huff said. "What is it that inherently entitles that person to all the rights that belong to people here legitimately?"

Harry Pachon, professor of public policy at USC, said the bills are too extreme and not well thought-out.

"It's posturing to a certain ideology that believes unauthorized immigrants are the root of all problems," he said. "Drafting draconian proposals on them is easy, because who speaks for the unauthorized immigrant?"

Huff said many countries do not provide automatic citizenship to those born on their soil. He added the 14th Amendment right was created to negate an infamous court decision that denied Dred Scott, a 19th century black slave, citizenship rights.

"It was never voted on by Congress for its current usage," he said. "The way it's being used now has never been talked about."

Huff's five-bill package would eliminate bail for illegal immigrants suspected of violent crimes or gang ties and prevent cities from prohibiting local police officers from cooperating with immigration officials.

It would also require that children who are illegally in the country and charged with violent felonies to be reported by local authorities to immigration officials.
Another bill would revoke business licenses of employers who hire illegal workers, a bill supported by the California Small Business Association.

Betty Jo Toccoli, association president, said small business owners who follow the law are at a disadvantage because an underground economy creates unfair competition.

"He wants to level the playing field, and we support the bill," she said.

Pachon said the consequences of such legislation could be dire.

Money sent home by workers in the U.S. is vital to the economies and stability of many Latin American countries.

"That flow of money is keeping economic stability in many Latin American countries," he said.

If the source of funds were jeopardized, Pachon added, there could be social upheaval and even greater flows of unauthorized immigrants moving across the border.

Local authorities said requiring police agencies to cooperate with immigration officials could lead to crimes going unreported and eyewitnesses refusing to come forward due to fear of being deported.

West Covina police Chief Frank Wills said departments are already strained and said immigration issues are rarely a priority.

"With the volume of cases you're investigating, it's not a conscious decision to enforce or not enforce laws," he said. "You have to deal with front burner issues by necessity."

He added that police rely on all community members to help them keep streets safe, regardless of immigration status, and said such a bill could have a chilling effect.

Pachon said the bills are mostly symbolic.

"They either haven't thought fully through as to what the negative aspects are, or they haven't read the Constitution," he said.

Huff, who is running for a senate seat currently held by termed-out Sen. Bob Margett, R-Arcadia, acknowledged that the bills are not likely to pass but said they are necessary to help resolve the state's looming fiscal crisis by stemming the flow of undocumented immigrants.

"We add some huge costs to our state," Huff said, "because of our immigration problem."

Don't forget about the often scorned and dreaded "snail mail" too!!

I'm going to begin using that in addition to email and have been encouraging others to do so as well. After all, it's easy to ignore email but it's not so easy to disregard sacks upon sacks of regular mail, now is it? They also can't stop you from sending a regular letter if you aren't in their district the way they can block email and calls from those not in their district.
