San Juan Capistrano, CA. group rallies for 'buycott' of Arizona

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – Close to 40 demonstrators waved Arizona and U.S. flags and displayed sings reading "Support Arizona's Law," "Boycott the Boycott" and "No Amnesty," at the busy intersection of Camino Capistrano and Del Obispo Street on Saturday.

SJC Americans, an activist group opposed to illegal immigration, organized the rally to support an Arizona law that gives increased powers to police to detain people suspected of being in the country illegally.

The Arizona law, SB1070, which takes effect in July, will require police officials or agencies to try to determine the immigration status of a person involved in "lawful contact" with law enforcement "where reasonable suspicion exists regarding the immigration status of the person."

A follow-up bill, HB2162, amended the law to describe lawful contact as "stop, detention or arrest" in the enforcement of any other law or ordinance.

The law also authorizes law-enforcement agencies to "transport an unlawfully present alien to a federal facility."

"Everybody has to show identification in every other country in the world," Steve Nelson said through a blaring megaphone aimed toward passing motorists. "All we are asking for is what is right ... enforcement of our laws.

"We are being taken over by illegal immigrant drug cartels that chop off people's heads ... it is time to have some guts and stand up for America and stand up for Arizona."

Another demonstrator, Mark Hermanson, 42, is a resident alien who has been in the U.S. from England since 1976.

"I have no issue with showing my green card," said Hermanson, a U.S. Army veteran. "If my daughter was to be out past curfew, she would have to prove she was old enough ... If my other daughter was to buy alcohol, she would have to prove she is 21. What is so wrong with that."

Many motorists passing by the intersection either honked horns or flashed thumbs-up signs in support of the demonstrators.

    A few displayed thumbs-down sings.

The law has sparked opposition from critics who say it amounts to racial profiling. Supporters of the law counter that it says "a law-enforcement official or agency cannot solely consider race, color or national origin when implementing these provisions, except as permitted by the U.S. or Arizona Constitution."

Several cities and athletes have threatened to boycott events in Arizona and products and services originating there.

"We're seeing a lot of outcry with this 'boycott Arizona' movement," Tony Brown, a leader of SJC Americans, said in an interview before the rally. "There's been a lot of that stuff going on, but our efforts are to counteract the boycott movement with a 'buycott Arizona' movement."

His group is encouraging people to visit www.buycottarizona.com to learn more about opposition to the boycotts.

A Pew Research Center poll conducted this month showed that 59 percent of the about 1,000 respondents approved of Arizona's law. Seventy-three percent said they approved of requiring people to show documentation of their legal status to police if asked to do so.

Brown's group believes the federal government isn't doing enough to protect the borders and that more states should adopt laws like the one in Arizona.

The group concluded the two-hour demonstration by walking about a quarter-mile to the Mission San Juan Capistrano, where dozens of people were lined up for the annual Battle of the Mariachis Festival.

The demonstrators waved signs and talked through megaphones from across the street for about 10 minutes before dispersing.
