HAYWARD — A Hayward man whom police said has confessed to killing his older sister was charged with her murder Tuesday at the Hayward Hall of Justice.

Jose De Jesus Delgado, 25, was arrested Saturday, after admitting to the crime during an interview with Hayward Police Inspector JP Guimaraes, police said.

The sister, Sylvia Jacqueline Ramos, 36, had been found dead Friday afternoon in the backyard of her home on the 25000 block of Donald Avenue in south Hayward.

The confession is "corroborated by physical evidence and witness statements," police said.

Family members, however, said they do not believe Delgado — who also faces immigration violations for living in the country illegally — would hurt his older sister. Those interviewed Tuesday reported no known tensions between Delgado and Ramos.

"She was like a mother to him and we just don't see how this could have happened," Maria Ramos, the victim's stepsister, said Tuesday outside the courthouse.

Investigators initially were unsure how the mother of two died, and originally reported she died of a serious head injury.

But after an autopsy, police on Tuesday confirmed that Ramos had suffered a fatal gunshot wound.

Police are not releasing a motive and said the incident is still under investigation. Ramos' death was the city's sixth homicide this year.

No information was available about Delgado's next scheduled court appearance.
