REGION: Police raid homes, make arrests in morning 'sweep'

Dozens of officers from federal, state and local agencies searched homes and arrested alleged gang members early Wednesday morning in a large sweep related to a federal indictment, according to witnesses and an FBI spokesman.

The spokesman released no information, other than to invite the press to an 11 a.m. news conference in San Diego.

Officers from several different agencies massed at the Escondido Police Department headquarters on Wednesday morning. Among the agencies represented were Escondido, Oceanside, the California Highway Patrol, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, county probation and state parole.

Several Escondido residents called the North County Times and tweeted that agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration and Escondido police had raided nearby houses and apartment units.

Milton White, 88, said that about 6:30 a.m., Drug Enforcement Administration agents raided a home near his in the 4400 block of Ashford Glen. White said he had believed the home was empty because its former occupants recently moved out.

White said he and other neighbors counted 18 law enforcement vehicles filling the narrow streets of the community of townhouses.

It was not clear which gang or gangs authorities were targeting. The San Diego County District Attorney's office has injunctions against two Latino gangs in Escondido, Westside and Diablos, though they are not the only gangs in town.
