CA: Senator pushes school course on mass 1930s deportations

Senator pushes school course on mass 1930s deportations

SACRAMENTO - State Sen. Gil Cedillo is trying to shine some light on a shocking but little known episode in American history. He faces an uphill battle.

The Los Angeles Democrat is the author of a bill that would require public junior high and high schools to teach students about the deportation of about 2 million Latinos, including 400,000 Californians, to Mexico during the Great Depression.

Elementary schools would have the option of including information about the deportations in social science instruction.

The deportation program was started in 1929 (and ran to 1944) by the Hoover administration, supposedly as a way to get rid of illegal immigrants and open up jobs during the Depression. Most of those rounded up and sent to Mexico were American citizens or legal immigrants, critics say.

Cedillo calls it "an embarrassment to all Americans."

"Those that don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it," he said. "That would be another tragedy upon a tragedy. . . . The way to avoid that is through education."

Cedillo's bill is scheduled to be considered today by the Senate Appropriations Committee.

That committee shelved an earlier version of the legislation last year as part of an effort to hold down spending. A committee analysis said the bill could lead to hundreds of thousands of dollars in state costs to reimburse school districts for a new mandate.

Cedillo said he might be able to "tweak the language regarding what's mandatory, what's optional or available" to get the bill out of committee.

Even if the bill clears the Legislature, it faces a possible veto by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who turned down similar legislation in 2006 that was introduced by then-Sen. Joe Dunn, a Democrat from Garden Grove.

Guess one-bill Gil is trying to get something else passed eh?

Yes, a couple times in our history we attempted to control illegal immigration and from what I've read it worked quite well. Afterall, even Jorge says 'we're a nation of laws.' It's just that our government doesn't think they need to follow some of them anymore.

Things like that will not happen again if we pass the SAVE act they will deport themselves without and benifets they would leave. And the process to deport someone is so much more advanced than in the 30's. It just wouldn't happen.

An embarassment for Americans? I think not, oh clueless one. There was a Depresssion going on and illegal aliens did not belong here. The US prospered after deporting those 2 million illegals, didn't it?

We will repeat that history because it was the RIGHT thing to do and for the good of our nation.

You sure you want to teach this subject,Cedillo?

Do a web search for "Operation Wetback" to see how President Eisenhower got the job done back in the 50's.

For each illegal alien deported under the program, an estimated 9 additional illegal aliens self-deported.

When I was in junior high, I wore an "I like Ike" button.

No, what he's trying to do is stir the pot which is already close to boiling over.

I swear.....watching all of these pro-illegal individuals and organizations nudging illegal aliens and their supporters toward violence is no different than watching someone poke at a gaggle of bears with long pointy sticks.

I tell what's an "embarrassment" to Americans. It's Cedillo's ethno-centric, pro-illegal invader agendas in which he attempts to include his beloved illegals within the term "Americans." It's embarrassing to see a guy who was elected by American Citizens, to continue to pursue his obvious loyalties to Mexico and their illegal invaders. That's embarassing!

Here is a little hint Cedillo. Your beloved illegals are never going to be Americans, regardless of how times you resort to calling us "un-American because we want the law enforced and the illegals deported.
