Students Face Tough Choices After Immigration Raids

RICHMOND, Calif. (KCBS) -- The recent immigration raids in the East Bay, blamed for creating a “reign of terror” for many Latinos, are also forcing some high school students to follow their deported parents back to their homeland.

One Richmond high school student said her friend went home one day to find her parents had been sent back to Mexico.

“She came home, nobody was home. After she knew that her parents weren't home, she finally found out that they got deported, so she had to go with them," she told KCBS’ Dave Padilla.

"I don't think that's really fair. Her parents, they just came here for a better life. Some people don't got nothing in Mexico. Or any other place. So this was their only hope and I just don't think it's fair."

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents targeted mostly undocumented Latinos. Sweeps in Richmond and Concord resulted in over 200 arrests. Of those, 94 were undocumented immigrants.

Following the raids, many schools in the area with a large Latino student populations experienced drops in attendance.

This girl has ONLY her parents to blame for her situation now. It's
"not fair" that America should have to tolerate this invasion either!

Stand up and fight for your rights in your own country! The US can't take in the whole world. If the US was like Mexico, you wouldn't be coming here...and if people that are betraying this country get their way it will be! Then what will you have gained?
Please help save America for our children and grandchildren... they are counting on us. THEY DESERVE the goodness of AMERICA not to be given to those who are stealing our children's future! ... and a congress who works for THEM!

The people of Mexico and South America have to fight their governments in their own country and demand a better life. We do not owe the world a better life. They broke the law, got caught and now have to face the consequences.

I don't think Mexico or any South American put up illegal aliens either. When this students graduates and can't find a job because of illegal immigration or because of HB1 visas increases are out of control, I'm sure she will have a different perspective.

Somewhere omitted in this sob story is the fact that [if I recall correctly] that Richmond has the 2nd highest violent crime rate in California (by incorporated city).

Now you don't suppose that either illegal aliens and/or gangs could be part of that problem, do you?

There's a "Richmond" in California? I thought they were talking about Richmond, Va.

Yep. It's in the bay area, on the east side and north of Berkeley.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, PhredE because honestly, I did think they were talking about Richmond, Va. As we all know, illegal immigration is no longer just a border state problem, which means my mistake was an easy one to make.
