Police dog, gunfire net crime suspects

Law enforcement agents in two parishes were able to make arrests in two recent burglaries in progress, thanks to a police dog and an armed business owner, authorities said Monday.

In one case, a police dog latched onto an illegal immigrant inside a burglarized residence, Tangipahoa Parish deputies said.

In the Livingston Parish case, deputies arrested two men after a resident shot out a front tire of their vehicle as they tried to flee a burglary scene, deputies said.

In Hammond, police and deputies found blood on the inside of a window when they answered a burglary call on Blackburn Road, Blair Foster of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

Believing an intruder was still in the house, deputies issued him a warning then sent Bart, a police dog, inside, she said.

The dog grabbed the suspect, who then began to choke the dog, until the dog’s handler struck the suspect, Foster said.

Bart wasn’t injured, but the suspect had to be taken to a hospital to be treated for a puncture wound from one of Bart’s teeth, she said.

She identified the arrested man as Simon Alba, 44, an illegal alien.

City police said they booked Alba on burglary Sunday evening.

In Livingston Parish, two men burglarized two buildings near Albany on Friday before the owner of one of buildings spotted them and blew out a front tire of their van with a shotgun as the men tried to flee with agricultural and lawn equipment, said Jason Ard, chief of operations of the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office.

One of the men surrendered at that point, but the other ran away.

He later broke into a house a half-mile away in an attempt to hide from a helicopter-aided search, Ard said.

George Singleton, 41, who was found inside a closet in a residence on Mary Kinchen Road, was booked on three counts of burglary and on possession of crack cocaine, Ard said. Singleton lives at 26205 Pierson Road, Albany.

Christopher Whittington, 36, 41714 Whittington Road, Tickfaw, was booked on two counts of burglary, Ard said.

I think they should take Bart to a vet and make sure he didn't catch anything from the guy he bit.
I often use my dog to help BP find illegals hiding in the brush on my property but I will not turn him loose as I am afraid they will hurt him.

I've been feeding him pedigree, I don't know where it's from but haven't seen it listed. I could be wrong though but all of our dogs seem ok.
