California’s Contra Costa County Severs Ties with ICE
California’s Contra Costa County Severs Ties with ICE
0
Matt Perdie11 Jul 2018Contra Costa County has reportedly become the latest county in Northern California in the past month to sever its contract with the federal government’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to jail illegal aliens at a Richmond jail over rising costs and pushback against President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
Last month, the Sacramento County jail also severed ties with ICE. And in December, Monterey County cut ties to the law enforcement agency.
“There is not one single overriding issue that causes the termination of this contract,” Sheriff David Livingston said at a news conference in Martinez, California, on Tuesday, as reported by SFGate.com.
“The outstanding work by the over 1,000 employees of the office of the sheriff has been overshadowed by the attention the ICE contract brings, even though immigration is a matter of federal law,” Livingston reportedly added. “Managing protests in Richmond have become expensive and time-consuming for our staff.”
Livingston reportedly has unilateral authority to cancel the contract with ICE by giving 120 days’ notice, which means it will become inactive in November.
ICE officials were reportedly disappointed with Livingston’s announced move.
Some Democrats are calling on the government to “abolish ICE,” while Hollywood actress-turned-New York gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon tweeted has begun referring to ICE as a “terrorist organization.”

Parents who have lived here for decades, paying taxes, building small businesses. Parents whose children are legal U.S. citizens. Parents who have no criminal record. ICE's mere existence causes many New Yorkers to live in daily fear that they will lose their family.

I can think of no better description than to call ICE a terrorist organization, and I will wear any criticism from @mike_pence as a badge of honor.

Trump supporters, meanwhile, believe that the Democrats’ attacks on ICE will backfire.
Dilbert creator and cartoonist Scott Adams reportedly suggested President Trump should rename ICE to the “National Immigration and Customs Enforcement” so that when Democrats try to abolish it, they would be getting rid of “NICE.”

LOL @ScottAdamsSays just suggested @realDonaldTrump should rename @ICEgov. Change it to "National Immigration and Customs Enforcement." That way, when Democarts like @Ocasio2018 and @SenGillibrand try to abolish it, they're getting rid of "NICE."

Philadelphia prosecutor says no to contract renewal with ICE
0
11 Jul 20182PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner says he will not support renewing a contract allowing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement access to Philadelphia’s real-time arrest database.
Krasner’s statement Wednesday comes as advocates have peppered Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney’s office with demands to end the contract. Immigration supporters have demanded an end to the contract that allows ICE access to the database saying it makes immigrants less likely to report crimes.
Two of the three stakeholders in the contract — the district attorney, city courts and the city — would have to vote against renewing it to end ICE access when it expires in August.
A city spokeswoman told Philly.com that Kenney has not decided whether to renew, citing concerns about the Trump administration’s threat to defund cities that don’t adhere to ICE’s demands.
