What is a special agent?

HSI is the largest investigative unit in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). It uses its unique immigration and customs legal authorities to protect the United States from all illegal activity with a border nexus. As an HSI special agent, you will support the mission of ICE by enforcing customs and immigration law while investigating criminal activity such as cyber-crimes, child exploitation, human smuggling and trafficking, drug smuggling, document and benefit fraud, counter-proliferation and transnational gang investigations.

“There’s no typical day and that is what I love about this job. When I wake up every day, I’m energized to go in and do something different,” said HSI San Antonio Special Agent Cory Downs. “It’s not a 9 to 5 job. You have to be on your toes and you have to be the type of person who can roll with the punches and do something different every day. You have to be totally prepared for the unexpected at all time.”
